One thing it's worth remembering is that the timetable function is relatively primitive compared to real life. Whereas if you can't keep to the specified schedule you get penalised, in real life many services are advertised earlier GBTT than WTT, in many cases resulting in the train appearing to run a couple of minutes late. Whilst this might seem pointless, it tends to encourage a train to depart as soon as possible and keep to WTT schedule better. This has value for instance on busy commuter routes into a major city, as it keeps traffic moving as far as possible.

The point I'm getting to is that you can replicate this effect by specifying earlier than possible departure times (which appear red - not necessarily wrong!), which then simulates the experience a real driver is faced with. But you'll then get penalised by the simulator.

WTT = The Working TimeTable
GBTT = The Great British TimeTable (publicly advertised)

A great place to compare Timetables and the real World is Raildar.
Here is an example of Euston http://raildar.co.uk/map/EUS
Just left click and "Drag" the map to where you want or enter location.
Raildar junctions map covers the whole uk and gives realtime information on any train you click on.
There are other sites but I particually like this version because of the map and junctions.
