Did they work to Didcot? Or was that the sole domain of the Class 56 before the 66s arrived?

Yeah as Bob points out all the coal into Didcot from the North were usually 58 hauled, many hours spent on Oxford photting them

Yeah as Bob points out all the coal into Didcot from the North were usually 58 hauled, many hours spent on Oxford photting them

So basically the locos seen at Didcot in around 1990-2000 would be mostly 58s and 60s, with perhaps some 56s?

cant ever remember seeing a 56 at Didcot on a coal train from the north it was all 58's until the 60's tripped up, the only 56 i can clearly remember there was 053 on a rake of bogie oil tanks

56s did work the Didcot MGRs for a while before the introduction of the 58s from 1983, then 60s took over most of those diagrams from the early 1990s

Back in 1981, I spent a few hours by the side of the arrival lines at the Power Station, and saw three 56s side by side!

So basically in the last years of BR, and early years of EWS (before the 66s) it was all Class 60s, both on coal and tanks?

As the Western route is out from JT a quick question with the 58 on it's way soon.

Did the MGR's from Wales to Didcot use the Severn Tunnel or did they take the round about route?

Most MGRs to Didcot came from Midlands collieries. There were a few workings in the early eighties from South Wales but these were normally powered by class 47 or 56. I presume these went via the tunnel.

I don't think there ever was any from Wales to Didcot. To the best of my knowledge all the coal came from the Midlands during the 80's and 90's and then imported coal after that via Avonmouth.

I've read articles about the 58 delivering coal to Didcot from Wales and seen the odd shot on Flickr and the such like but as with anything like photo's and articles they can be a memory snap shot from an occurance in time that only happened a couple of times when the person was there and wasn't the norm.

Thank you for the comments and feedback, much appreciated. The images released by DTG were actually of an earlier version of the model, we have made numerous changes since those were done. Thankfully, I think we have already covered most of the concerns I've read here, so hopefully it should be a much better product for it.
