Overshap in late 1980's

Good evening,

I would like to create a scenario for Over Shap, set in the late 1980's.

I'm currently deciding on what stock to use and what services to create. Being a southerner I don't know alot about this region. I would also like to know were locos operating in both Intercity and Corporate blue at this time?

The stock I have available is:

87
86
37
56
40
47
31
HST
101
158

Mk1/mk2/mk2 aircon/mk3 coaches
158

Any knowledge would be very appreciated.

Kind Regards

David

You'd see lots of 86s and 87s of course, but by the late 80s you'd see a lot of 90 + Mk3 + DVT formations for the premier services, so well worth getting the lovely 90 from AP.

You'd rarely see a 56 on Shap, 37s a little bit, 31s quite rare. 40s depends on your definition of 'late 80s' - they were gone by the InterCity Swallow era.

HSTs a bit, I recall seeing them from time to time (they don't go that way now). 47s all over the place. Hardly any DMUs over the full length, but 101 between Preston and Carnforth, 150/156/158 at south end and again at Carlisle (coming in from Dumfries, Workington, Newcastle and Leeds).

Livery again depends on your definition. My photos from 1985 show things roughly 50/50 blue & grey or the later scheme, by 1990 there wasn't much blue left.

Hope that helps

Paul

It might be worth searching on Youtube for videos of the line in the time period you wish to set the scenario.
I don't recall seeing any HST services over the line as the XC services were still loco hauled with AC Electrics.
The APT was in test mode and brief service from 1980 - 1986 and Oovee was making one

But that seems to have gone quiet.

Have a look at this page for pictures of the trains operating thru Preston

I did not say there was no HST's working over the line just I, personally, did not recollect any - and there's no idea of the date the picture was taken.
And the 101's were not seen between Preston and Lancaster until much later - in the 1980's the trains were worked by 108 units.

Thanks for the info everybody, lots of very helpful insight. I'm thinking early 80's is the better period to recreate, until I'm able to purchase the class 90.

I will probably use a 101 as a stand in for a 108 as externally they look very similar.
