Any interest in...?

Post by rkk01 »

A short, unfinished GW/BR(W) steam route with a high level of driving challenge?
(The highest tunnel and toughest climb* on the steam era network, combined with a light loading and small engines...)

A good route for the current / proposed stable of ex-GWR (and BR) DTG, Digital Traction and Victory Works steam locos.

It's nowhere near the level where it could be uploaded to the library, and my homebrew routes concentrate on track laying rather than asset building :-(

But if there is any interest I'll start a thread on the route building page and see how far I can get :-)

Thanks very much for asking, unfortunately not for me, I am not into steam to be honest, though I am sure there will be interest........having said that if I could run a few cheeky diesels on it, then I am all for it.

How about that for a U-turn?

Ah, well...

I've seen a photo of of a green 37 on the route, and have been testing with the 37 and 117....

And I'm not beyond using Arriva Trains Wales units on my South Wales routes ;-)

I'd play it with diesels. My steam driving isn't that good and if it's
a challenging route, no doubt I'd stall in a steamer.

Yes, Brecon to Merthyr.

Track is laid from Talybont on Usk to Torpantau. Currently blending terrain to the track and adding terrain texture. Next bit will be Torpantau to Pontsticill

A very interesting route, should be quite challenging, one minute working hard the next trying to control the train on the decent. Need some Ammonia tanks for the Dowlais to Haverton Hill !!!!!

I haven't decided how far / which way to go at the southern end... To Pant and Dowlais, probably, but the layout around Dowlais is very complex...

And having cycled the Taff trail many times, I also like the idea of heading down the valley to Pontsarn and Cefn Coed viaduct, perhaps including Morlais tunnel back towards Dowlais.

I really don't know why DTG (or other developers) haven't ventured into the South Wales valleys. Huge scope and variety!

The further south you go the better !!!! -- after all we have a fair range of (S.Wales) GWR locos available, Hope you manage to achieve all you want too, never tried route building myself so cannot help a lot, have a few map / track diagrams, but, not to certain of the Merthyr area.

Might need to ignore the CCE...!

It's quite difficult to establish the loading for the route. It seems to have been upgraded to "yellow" at some stage under the GW system, but I can't find any evidence that the axle loading was increased to "blue" to match the mid Wales line and Cambrian.

Most photos show 57xx Panniers, 2251 Collett Goods and some 2MTs.
The 43xx Mogul, 56xx and Manor would, strictly speaking, be too heavy...!

So, light, low powered engines certainly add to the challenge.

So, I have finally opened a thread for the Breakneck and Murder...

With a few screenshots showing the progress so far - and don't they make you realise how much work is required!!!
