Strange error with nvidia driver under Windows10

Post by smarty2 »

Several times now I have had a crash due to an error with the drivers for my GTX760? Windows 10 tells me that railworks.exe has been blocked from accessing my graphics card?? This preceded by several auto pauses then a vertex error due I expect from windows blocking said access? Now I rolled back the driver still with the same result.... Is this a windows 10 thing?? :-? Never had this under W7.

Its a Win 10 issue. When win 10 updates the NVidia driver automatically on some occasions when you next load TS2016, the cpu usage rises to 100% on all 4 cores - that gives an overload instance and TS crashes, and/or is very, very slow to load and run, sometimes with a vertex buffer issue (the graphics card is not receiving the correct data from the cpu fast enough or not at all).
Sometimes not installing the GeForce experience software can help.
When this occurs I just do a clean install of the GeForce drivers either 350.12 or 347.88 and that cures the issue - until the next time that windows 10 updates!!

I have Windows 10 and this OS has never updated Nvidia drivers by itself.

You are very lucky then. :)
The NVidia drivers update (if there is one) with Windows automatic update unless you use a 3rd party app or a registry tweak or use a temporary fix to turn that off (Ultimate Tweaks for Windows 10).
Many posts on the web: http://betanews.com/2015/07/26/windows- ... -computer/

All I am saying is that on some PC's Windows 10 updates can cause issues.

Hi Trev
You are also very lucky, it must that Napier art deco air! :)
Most people are complaining about automatic updates in Win 10
Last Tuesday I had the Win 7/8/10 version of Geforce 350.12 installed - Win 10 updated automatically and I found that the Win 10 version of 358.50 installed which gives me a distorted and flashing 2D Map as I use SSAA setting in TS2016.
What NVidia driver version are you using?
How did you get that version?
How long have you had that version?
Do you get any 2D Map corruption using SSAA in TS2016?
Thanks

You can turn auto drivers update off in W10 by doing this. In Windows Explorer right click on This PC, select Properties, Advanced System Settings, Device Installation settings and in the window that comes up you can turn driver updates off or on etc.

I'm using the 358-50 drivers which I downloaded from Nvidia. I always download my drivers from Nvidia. Graphics card drivers through Windows update always seem to be one or two versions behind than Nvidias site. That's probably why I don't have Windows update wanting to install the latest drivers.

With these drivers the 2D map is no longer distorted at FXAA+3x3 SSAA. I don't run at this setting as I get a big FPS drop but run at FXAA+8xMSAA. I actually cannot see any real difference between them.

That's what I thought! You already have the latest driver so Win 10 is not going to install it!
With Win 10 when it dl a new NVidia driver it is the most up to date one that you can get from NVidia themselves.
Unfortunately, I'm sorry, your method of stopping driver downloads does NOT work, Windows fails to change the registry key (by design?) and the only sure way is to use the temporary fix wushowhide.diagcab or the Ultimate tweaking tool for Win 10.

On my 3 rigs the 2D map is distorted using SSAA settings using any driver post 353.xx (specific for Win 10 and separate for Win 7/8) - both NVidia and DTG are aware of this issue which could be fixed in the future??

It looks like that this does NOT affect everyone the same way, but those that it does, its a right royal pain.
This is what I mean: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to- ... g-updates/
Prevent Windows Update From Installing Specific Updates and Drivers
How to Uninstall and Block Updates and Drivers on Windows 10
Windows 10 automatically downloads and installs all updates.
This includes security updates, feature updates, and driver updates provided through Windows
If Windows 10 insists on installing a specific update or driver that’s causing problems, you can prevent Windows Update from installing that particular update. Microsoft doesn’t provide a built-in way to block updates and drivers from automatically being downloaded, but it does offer a downloadable tool that can block updates and drivers so Windows won’t download them. This gives you a way to opt out of specific updates — uninstall them and “hide” them from being installed until you unhide them.
Thanks for your input - appreciate it.

Like you Trev I too check and update my graphics card on a regular basis direct from Nvidia and I've never ticked or unticked anything for Windows 10 to update my drivers. I've never yet seen any notification that the Windows automatic updater has installed any new drivers.

I agree. I am using a pair of high end nVidia cards in SLI. I normally use [FXAA + 3x3 SSAA] and my 2D map gets terribly distorted using the 355.98 drivers. If however I change the settings to [FXAA + 8xMSAA] then the 2D map is displayed correctly but with a significant reduction in image quality.

I have e-mailed DTG on this and as you have said they are aware of the issue and apparently have communicated with nVidia. We can only hope it gets fixed, but I shall not hold my breath.

Cheers.

I was running old ish nvidia drivers for a couple of weeks or so after building my new Intel system and windows never auto updated my drivers. I've seen many over on the guru3d forums mentioning about it but it's never been an issue in my win 10 installation.

Thanks for all the replies gentlemen, I've turned of auto driver installation as Trev has kindly explained and will run through the links that Peter has kindly supplied. Yes it was taking an absolute age to load but I have done a clean install of the latest driver from the Nvidia website, fingers crossed.
