RWP's Help

Out of habit, I downloaded a file and it was just a RWP and nothing else. I wasnt paying attention and I clicked on the RWP which of course windows didnt recognise. I thought I had closed it correctly but instead ALL my RWP's now want to open using Adobe Reader :( Now every time I download an RWP it says that it is this type of file.

How do I remedy this please and it return it back to the normal status of the file so I can install it correctly using the package manager?

Googled all over the place but cant seem to find out and dont want to have to return my computer to a previous state?

All you have to do is just open RW Utilities, search for the file, and then click the (in your case at the moment) the Adobe file.

I'm going off Windows 7 but before and after should be the same.

Open Control Panel then search for Default Programs then pick Make a file type always open in a specific program.
Go down the list and change .rwp to open with Utilities.

I think that has worked but I now have the TS logo to the left of the file... Before I had a blank file and it installed... Is that common?

Instead of using utilities for RWP files use 7zip far quicker and easier. http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

That's a rather sweeping statement, and not the best advice for all users. 7-zip will not install RWP files - it simply opens them and you would then have to install the files manually. In doing so you lose the utilities.exebuilt in feature that identifies which files have been installed by which RWP, avoiding loss of critical files for, say, one route when uninstalling another.

Seeing this topic posted here has prompted me to seek about changing not necessarily my default program, but the Icon that identifies the .RWP files. I use WinRar to open them and the icon for WinRar is associated with the .RWP files then I manually copy the files into there respective folders as I find that using the TS2015 Utility program takes ages to collate when the program is started up for the first time . Now, off course using WinRar as the default means that I see the WinRar Icon .RWP every time these files are seen, which can be confusing.

What I want to do is have the .RWP files icon showing as they used too when they first started to appear way back when. Can someone please advise how ?

Then when I open them, ensure that the "open with default program" is unticked and manually select WinRar to open each time.

I hope that I have explained above what I am seeking to do, as every time I re-read it I am bamboozling myself.

Thanks

Antony.

It involves delving into, and editing a registry value Anthony. Not that difficult to do but something that scares a lot of people.
I can't remember off the top of my head which entry it is to give the "what program do you want to use" prompt but I'll look once I get home. As far as I'm aware though you can'tt have the 'always use this program' box unticked, so you'll have to untick it at each use.

Load Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe) and navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

Scroll down the list to

.rwp

In the left hand pane, right click the .rwp entry and choose 'Export'
You'll be prompted to provide a name and location for the exported file, the desktop is as good a place as any and the name can be whatever makes sense to you. This is just a backup, a 'get out of jail card' so that you can easily revert back to a known, good (albeit not perfect), working configuration. As a slight aside, when you make any change to a computer or installed programs you create the opportunity for that change to cause issues---getting back to a 'pre-breaking it' state is generally considered *a good idea* so whether you use Utilities.exe or an archive manager to install routes, reskins etc it's handy to know just what has been changed or added so that the effects can be nullified if it doesn't work as it should. Simply installing via Utilities.exe doesn't, by itself, let you know this information so knowing how to view the contents of a .rwp/.ap archive is a useful trick to learn.

Back to the job in hand..... now you have that XYZ.reg file exported simply delete the .rwp entry in the left hand pane. This change should be effective immediately so double click a .rwp package to test. You should be presented with the 'Windows doesn't know which program....' box so select the 'Choose from a list of installed programs' option and click on WinRAR. Make sure the 'Always use this program' box is unticked!! (as I wrote earlier I don't know how to change this behaviour, but I'll see if I can find anything)

True, but how many routes come as .rwp packages, and how many of those that do include assets that you may need for other routes?

Generally these days, it's only user created stuff that comes as .rwp, more often than not simply referencing assets rather than including them. Deleting a route you no longer need doesn't mean you'd want to delete the assets (if any) also installed and doesn't need Utilities nor TS to accomplish--simply deleting the relevant ..\Content\Routes folder gets rid of surplus routes. Of course cutting said folder out of the game directory structure and pasting somewhere safe, even to a DVD, is possibly a more sensible option; who's to say you wouldn't have a change of heart and decide you'd like to run that route again in the future?

All this is pretty basic file and folder management, something every PC user should be able to do and isn't specific to this game. Utilities.exe may make installations simpler but it brings the danger of creating a whole bunch of users completely ill-equipped for when things go wrong (AKA when we make a b0!!*>< of it--something we all have done, and will do again) so rather than steadfastly recommending one way or the other those of us more conversant with *how it works* should be passing on that knowledge and explaining the various options to new users so that they too can understand what's what and tailor their own strategies.

All I do is rename the rwp file to a "zip" extension...

eg. Class91Addon.rwp
becomes Class91Addon.zip

Then I open the file with "Winzip"

SImples !!

......but you wouldn't/shouldn't have a Class91Addon.rwp file .......are you confusing .rwp with .ap?
And why bother renaming files when WinZip will open .rwp files anyway?

Sorry, but WinZip will not open rwp files natively.
I've been in correspondence with the winzip people for nearly 2 years pointing this out.
You can make an association for .rwp files in WinZip but its flakey (on my systems anyway) and I had a lot of problems using it.
7-zip does the job so much easier (and wrt to .ap files it can actually extract a single file eg the routeproperties.xml file or geopxx files without having to extract the whole .ap file - I don't of any other program that can do that!)

I don't know how you can lose critical files using 7-zip to extract rwp files and then merge them in TS2015.
All it is doing is the same as utilities.exe except you have to manually merge the Assets/Contents folders yourself.

I tend to install all rwp files manually as then I know that they are installed.

Another thing about not using utilities is that you don't have to wait for 7zip to refresh. No WinZip won't extract RWP files.
