Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Do both sets of routes work as they should? It can only be considered a success if that is true.
Whether they do or not it's really a strategy that shouldn't be needed and is only 'glowing over' an underlying issue--one that's more likely to be due to your configuration than the game itself.

Well, it ran perfectly last night, and I made no changes between then and today.gptech wrote:Do both sets of routes work as they should? It can only be considered a success if that is true.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Yes, but what about "they"?
If you have 2 sets of routes do both sets work?
There's no doubt that splitting routes, and assets, eliminates problems but it's not the answer merely a work-around so it's only the start of a fix.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Agree a workaround of a programme limitation. All routes work perfectly for me doing this (8 months). Just eliminates the scenario database overflow nothing more. TS2015 works normally - it just has only part of you route collection at any one time. DTG were uninterested in doing anything about it.
Of course I might have been able to delete more scenarios that I have played if only DTG had not wiped all the green ticks and red crosses etc a little way back!
The one thing to watch out for is for route updates by steam - you may need to manually copy accross amended files between the route folders e.g update to my US routes when I have the non US stuff as my Routes folder. Minor inconvenience to get everything working.
I only run a single Assets folder which whilst very large works fine since the .ap files were introduced.
Issue is not a configuration issue - just too many scenarios to save to the database it seems. I tested this by adding a scenario at break point - game does not load. Remove one scenario - game loads normally. People encounter this after installing new route with more scenarios or getting scenarios off the workshop. Over the unknown limit you go and bang.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Separated my US routes off and now TS loads fine.
Think I might go one stage further so that I have a
route folder for: UK, US and OTHERS.
A batch file or three would make the renaming easier, but it's
been so long since I dabbled in DOS I forget how it is done.

Glad it helped. Trying to avoid a third Routes but who knows eventually it might become necessary. I could store more routes but don't like to limit my choice too much in game.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Very much so Chris - so thanks again.
don't think having 3 route folders - or rather, the switching
between them will cause too much hardship as TS now loads
up a lot quicker than it did when it used to crash out.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Yes that is one benefit I suppose - less routes to load thus quicker load times. At least the Assets folder does not seem to need splitting.

Coincidence perhaps? the .ap archives contain exactly the same number of files as an un-archived version would. Granted when .ap first appeared it was accompanied by a 'clean up' of how assets (and probably routes) were handled by the game when loading.
Just out of interest, how many routes/scenarios do you have in total?... it'd be nice to be able to gauge/guesstimate at what point the database becomes unreliable.

Route numbers vary as I stored a lot. It is more the number of scenarios rather than routes . For example my Great Western Mainline has 280 scenarios alone!!
Over the 2 Route folders I have 120 routes with 60 odd more stored by Mike Simpsons Store It application. Total scenarios in excess of 5000. That is after deleting some routes Freeroams initially. I delete scenarios that are problematic or that I know I will not play again. However the loss of played indicators last year really did not help.
DTG would not put a number of the limit we could have at any one time.
The 'ap files meant I was able to amalgamate 5 Asset folders so for me they were the biggest advance in TS.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Interesting, but something that muddies the waters a bit more than they already were.chrisreb wrote:Total scenarios in excess of 5000
I have 1,320 scenarios (or to be more precise 1,320 ScenarioProperties.xml files in 63 routes but even if there's a few .xml files without *real* content it's close enough) so the question that begs answering is how many would the average TS user have?
If we say yours is an extreme case, and even if we play with numbers a little and split your total, if you're well over the average or even well over the number drogba has before crashing that doesn't necessarily mean that what you've found to be a fix is applicable to him or the average guy. The number of scenarios of course could be influenced by the capabilities of the users PC, which not only covers the hardware but also how it's configured---what resources are used by other running programs?, is the AV checking TS files on access? etc, but we can't take the findings in an extreme case to be the answer; certainly part of it, used resources obviously have an effect but if drogba is nearer my 1,300 total, with comparable hardware, then we have to look at a more fundamental level.
Splitting the routes has alleviated the problem for him, of that there's no doubt but has it cured the problem?
Over to you drogba, how many scenarios do you have installed?

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Hi,
I've had a problem like this some time back, the game would very persistently crash about 1 - 2 minutes after the menus would show, if I wasn't quick enough selecting a scenario to run.
I managed to eventually fix the issue for me, by unsubscribing from one of workshop routes which must have had an update since I first installed it, and that update had some issues.
So if you still have this issue, then the suggestion to unsubscribe recent scenarios, or uninstall them otherwise if they're not from the workshop, seems like the first thing to try!

Which is effectively another way of reducing the number of scenarios which is what seems to be giving TS the issues when saving the database. Not saying I have identified any root cause just that doing the route splitting means TS2014 works every time now for me.
Would love to know what permanent fix there could be but with DTG being uninterested it is beyond my knowledge.

Re: TS15 crashing on startup
Yes, but in my case it was not the number of scenarios, it was a corrupt Workshop DLC - though in this case, it could well be the number of scenarios of course, his crash is at a different point than mine was.chrisreb wrote:tnleeuw01 wrote:Hi,

Hard to know without a stacktrace and / or a debugger.

Are you running TS2014 or 2015 Chris?
