Unreal Engine 4 now free

Just read on the PC gamer web site that Unreal 4 is now subscription free (was$19 per month). You can download it for free, create with it, and the only attachment seems to be giving them 5% of anything you make over $3,000 if anything goes commercial. So get in early for Train Simulators next generation and learn to build assets now! I probably forgot to mention the huge learning curve in making assets for the Unreal engine but hey, just one piece of good news at a time :)

Right - is that license to be paid by the individual developers, such as ChrisTrains, VictoryWorks, etc? Or to be paid by DTG for publishing the actual software which is based on UnrealEngine 4?

I see what you're getting at. I was thinking more of the benefits for the community with 'spare-room creators' who do so on the basis of making content for free to be used in freeware as we have today. Having such a powerful editing and creating tool at ones disposal is a gift that will keep on giving. I wouldn't presume to know what was going to happen with smaller independents who develop add-ons. I wouldn't like to guess their turnovers or business ambitions :)

The engine seems to import .fbx files that can be exported from 3ds without any plugins. The engine is quite user friendly and easy to use(much more straightforward than current export process). Hopefully Dovetail allows rolling stock developers to keep the same level of control for materials/shaders in UE4 version of TS.

PS. the engines default wood texture looks great on locomotive.. 8)

I have seen a couple of mentions of "Unreal Engine 4"

Would someone like to provide a brief description and explain what it will (should?) do for TS201X?

Cheers Martin

That does look great, I think people will be surprised at the difference the shaders will make to the appearance of stock - that wood shader on Teak or older coaching stock will look great.
