TS2015 freezing - WCMLoS: The Boat Train Part 2

Post by ttjph »

A new problem for me as my system is generally pretty stable with TS, although I'm aware that not all users are so fortunate.

Rather unhelpfully I finally allowed the upgrade to TS2015 to happen before playing this scenario for the first time - it's Boat Train Part 2 on WCMLoS, having previously only played Boat Train Part 1 on TS2014 - so there are two new things involved.

Put simply, I get most of the way through the scenario (a little past Tebay) and the game freezes, then eventually Windows reports that it's crashed. This has now happened twice out of two attempts; the first time I allowed for the possibility that it was because I'd slept the computer mid-game (something I do frequently, previously with few or no issues) and left it too little time to wake up before un-pausing, but it's just done it again and the computer's been on throughout.

From this video at least, it appears that the scenario can be completed (or could on TS2014)...

This video is hosted by YouTube, a site which is outside of the editorial control of UKTrainSim and as such Parental Control is strongly advised.

As this is a supplied scenario, and on an .ap file route, I doubt it's related to the size of my Kuju folder, for instance - but does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone completed this scenario in TS2015?

(How does one view the contents of a .dmp file, by the way? I have them for both instances.)

Thanks!

Thanks Trev - does that work for Railworks/Steam .dmp files as well as Windows?

I spotted some crash output in this thread:
http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 1&t=140214
and wondered how I would extract the equivalent data from my system. I presume these are the files such as
..\Steam\dumps\assert_steam.exe_20141223202603_1.dmp
- although looking more closely at the timestamp that may not actually be relevant as it's a couple of hours too early...

Trev
You may be able to "read" dmp files but how will you interpret them without the railworks source code?
Logmate may be another option?
Event viewer in case Windows was involved?

There could be several reasons why this particular scenario crashes TS2015 - I had one yesterday that just would not allow TS2015 to start but on ONE computer only - it started OK on another.
I guess that you cleared the blueprint cache files in TS2015?
It could be a mismatch to a memory address where the code is loaded into the Virtual Address Space but has not loaded into the physical RAM and because its not there - TS2015 crashes!
It could be a 'timeout" (similar to above) where again TS2015 cannot find the relevant code "quickly" enough and "times out" and crashes.
But, it could be a myriad of other causes both hardware and software.
Is it worth cloning the scenario either in TS2015 or RW_Tools and see if the cloned version crashes?
You could try starting Windows with a "clean boot" (Google) and see if it crashes then?

If you have just upgreaded to TS2015 (this late?) then turn down your graphics settings. The new enhanced cloud system uses considerable extra resources (even on routes without said clouds) and from my experience this is the usual cause of mid-scenario crashes.

There is the possibility that you pass a train going the other way and it's this train which is faulty and might be causing the crash.
Next time you run it see if something is approaching you just before where the system stops.

I had it once on a previous scenario where it would crash at a certain point so I stopped short, waited and as a train was due to appear in to view, and it crashed.

pH: will try clearing the blueprint cache - haven't done that, or needed to, in a very very very long time but probably a good idea!

John: will make sure I've got 3D weather turned off, especially as I don't own any of the routes that have it.

Yes, this late 'upgrading' to 2015 - and it was mostly accidental due to Steam messages leading me to believe I could go back online and still postpone the update! There seemed to be a number of issues discussed here (distant white hills, increased tile loading stutter) and precious few improvements for my use.

Peter: if the problem persists then I'll try coming to a halt at Tebay and seeing what happens...

Thanks all, and Merry Christmas!

Aargh! Just when I thought I'd made progress...

By saving before the crash, I determined that it always freezes at the same point (6.49 miles north of Oxenholme - I presume this is the point where the next tile is loaded, or something). Video memory usage (as reported by EVGA Precision X) is comfortably below the installed amount, incidentally.

After some experimenting it seemed to work with the Scenery Quality slider turned down to 33%. So, since resumed career scenarios don't count, I played it through again from the start - only to have it freeze at the same point once again.

Time to give up on this one, I think, and see later on whether I get the same problem in other WCMLoS scenarios...

Incidentally, the Scenery Quality slider seems to affect the following lines in PlayerProfiles.bin:

Code: Select all

<DetailTerrainTexture d:type="sInt32">3</DetailTerrainTexture>
			<DetailObjectTexture d:type="sInt32">3</DetailObjectTexture>
			<DetailShaders d:type="sInt32">2</DetailShaders>
although I haven't fully mapped all the settings.

Just a thought but have you tried standing still for say a few minutes and then carrying on as normal, if so did you manage to get any further? I had a similar issue with a scenario I was creating and the crash seemed to be down to AI, by doing the above I managed to complete the run but it was not easy to pinpoint the culprit! :(

I drove various attempts at different paces, between line speed and leaving it shut off for several miles (down to ~70 instead of 90-100). Exactly 6.49 miles to go in every case, so I'm pretty sure it's location-specific.

If you mean The Up Boat Train Part 2, I have run it twice with no problems.

In that case, it certainly looks that way :(

I just gave it a try, and completed it ok. (I won't mention the score though  )

I used to have a similar problem with the Riviera Line. There was a location, every time I got near, crash to desktop. (It was near Starcross, just after the 100Mph speed sign).

It must have been a problem with some corrupted assets or files, as this was fixed after a complete re-install of the simulator (which I had to do due to too many crashes and issues, and later due to new PC).

Try re-installing just the route WLoS, or if that doesn't fix it, all of TS2015...
