Much appreciated :-)

So, is anyone driving steamers with 0.5? How's that working for you?

Not yet - trying to get it to work with the 1st Generation DMUs. Looking forward to it tho.

it works fine at least with IHH 6 MT and a SSS modified version of the RSC Hall class engine.
Thanks for this great addition to your script: It's easier to understand than the F4 hud I used previously for this kind of engine. In fact, I only play now with your script on...

I can't seem to get the gears to work via lever in the Class 101 and 121. Any tips?

Don't know what is wrong so not really. It works just as any other axis and it works fine for me (I think I do have 121 and I have some other gears enabled locos).
Check the axis, check the section for the loco (if I do own 121 there will be one).

There is a case where the gears might be scripted poorly and require a specific nothed values to work. It happened for some combined throttles.

The gear number in the UI changes (but along the lines of 0, 1, 0, 2, 0, 3, 0, 4 - but when I stop moving the lever it returns to 0), however there's no movement in the lever. Using the RR Class 101 (Liverpool-Manchester).

This can mean you have 2 levers assigned to one axis (and they are not physically stable and send values changed all the time). I do have liverpool-manchester so I must own 101 so it has it's own section where I probably asign gears axis to the axis I assigned dynamic in the main config section. Have a look at the 101 section and modify accordingly.
How many axes you have? How do you have them configured?

I've got a total of 11 axes but am using 6 (some are on my flight sim joystick not used in Rail Sim), and have the gears shared with dynamic brakes (axis 11).

I've tried copying the Class 101 section to create a class 121 and removed the references to ignore the dynamic brakes etc etc as the gears are referenced as the same axis but that has the same result.

So you have in the main config two variables that have the same axis asigned? Like:

DynamicBrakeLine = 11
GearsLine = 11

EDIT: you definitely seem to have something resetting the gears value to the 0 position, fighting with your axis. I just can't think of what it might be. Can you set the gears position with a keyboard? There are sitiuations where game forbids you to do something (eg dynamic brake in US locos) and resets the value to 0 every time you modify it with an axis.

That is correct

Yes I can change gears with keyboard, and with joystick buttons.

Nothing comes to my mind. I'll have a look again when I'm at home.
One last question:
With this setup set the axis to 0, increase gear by keyboard. Get the train moving. And while having the gear at 2-3 position move the gear axis from 0 to some other value. Will it go back to 0 after you leave the axis?

Also check the trainsim-helper-joystick.txt after the value gets back to 0. What is the value of the line 11?

I just checked 101. Works fine for me. Please check the things I asked. I see no reason why something would override a gear axis value on my part.

Ok...tried moving the gear lever after being in 2nd and 3rd gear - the number in the UI still flickers but then returns to the correct gear. The lever doesn't move.

The value shows the correct number for the position of the lever.

EDIT - Further to that, I remapped the gear lever to another axis (disused) with the same result - on the Class 101 it of course did nothing at all, and the dynamic brake lever had the fluctuating numbers. On the Class 121 the new gear lever had the fluctuating numbers.

Also, is the default throttle action notched or smooth for unprogramed locos?

You used a word 'correct' for both of those statements. Let me clarify. In the first one you mean it returns to the gear set by keyboard? So if you set 2. Then you try to change it to 3 by an axis it returns to 2?
In the second statement you mean the value in the txt is correct as it shows a proper deflection for the physical axis?

Because of the loco configuration. But I think you are aware.

Smooth. It wouldn't know the notches by itself. They have to be configured manually.

About your problem. Something is causing the value to return to the one set by keyboard. That's even more awkward. The joystick script doesn't even know the value gear has. It just blindly sets the one you request. I'm really confused.

You mentioned you have 16 axes. I take you have multiple controllers. Can you please chose the simplest one and physically disconnect the rest. Then try the gears in the simplest possible configuration. Of course the line 11 will change so remember about that.

Do you observe such behaviour only on gears? The rest is ok?

Correct for both statements.
Smooth. It wouldn't know the notches by itself. They have to be configured manually.
I must have done something wrong somewhere as my 33 Class has a notched throttle.

Before I test the 101/121 any further and give you more grey hairs, it just occurred to me that I have applied the AP Class 101/121 sound pack that modifies physics... I'm wondering if that is the cause.
