The key is wireless router - (or router/modem) - your PC can still be linked by wire to that router via a network.
For the ipad to work wirelessly with your PC it needs to access a wireless source which can be via the router or a usb wifi dongle in your PC.

So are you saying that both devices have to be communicating wirelessly. My point was that both my iPad and my PC are on the same network 194.168.0.0/24 (194.168.0.11 and 194.168.0.2 respectively) but the iPad is connected wirelessly to the hub via either a 2.4GHz or a 5GHz connection and the PC via a cable. They are on the same network from the IP point of view but not on the same side of the bridge I suppose. I will try a wireless dongle in the PC.
