If the sounds aren't too 'throaty', wouldn't it be possible to adapt the Class 47 sounds to use with the Peak?. The two locos do sound very close to each other in most respects, horn excepted...

I think that'd be a fine plan.....

I unexpectedly received the free update, which was nice.

As a staunch sound critic I can offer my thoughts. First the good, I was pleasantly surprised to find that RSC have seemingly created a brand new soundset for this loco. As classic BR diesel locos go, the Peaks have always been a mystery to me. The exhaust note of a class 45 has never been as instantly recognisable as a 37, 20, 40, 25, 33, 55, 56 etc, at least to my ears anyway. The idle sound is about right for what I remember of big Sulzers, the engine sounds in general feel satisfactory although as usual for RSC sounds, the full throttle roar is somewhat underwhelming. The horn has come in for some stick on here but I really like it. It's 2-tone and clearly custom and new. The high tone in particular I think gives a nice prolonged blasting effect.

Now for the bad. My old pet hate which RSC never ever get right.... track joint sounds. Absolutely abysmal and sound more like a bag of spanners than hundreds of tons of steel wheels on steel rails. They are not the usual RSC snare drum 'pick pock' sounds but are a re-hash of something equally as bad that has gone before. A tinny jingly jingle sound, similar to the class 27, woeful.

Failing to nail the running sounds and/or the track joint sound is seemingly a minor detail for some but it's a show-stopper for me and completely ruins the experience. For this reason alone I'll be looking for an AP pro pack to rescue this loco and then it will become a true beast.

Engine sounds - 6/10
Horn sounds - 7/10
Track joint / running sounds - 1/10

No............just No! Though the two beasts are similar, they do sound quite different, wait for the AP soundpack

Interesting idea Bob,

It is my recollection that the 'Generator' 47's (401-420) sounded very much like a Peak in some respects, more so than the standard members of the class. I am pretty sure these had a similar fan roar to a 45.

Plus, I am pretty sure AP recorded audio towards their pro pack at the East Lancs using 47402?

Richard

Yes i have to agree here if you went up to one of the "peak army" on the end of Derby and said your engine is just a heavy 47 with too many wheels i dont think they would react well at all

Not got a free update for my class 45 but I did buy direct and not from steam. Cant complain though as I got the Class 20 as a free update as I had originally bought that on steam. So it seems that RSC are giving mostly free updates eventually to old DLC if bought on steam bar a few exceptions such as the Class 101. Its good that this loco has been re-released though and to hear that RSC have improved the sounds. A good sign as it shows DTG are listening to feedback and are trying. So although I did not get an update this time I will certainly buy the RSC version when/if AP do a sound pack for it.

Could be another reason that the 45 sounds no good is because the sound was recorded on the GCA with a speed limit of 25mph.

The recently released standalone Regional Railways 101 was free to anyone who had bought any 101 previously: the original version, the BR one and the Strathclyde set.

All preserved railways - as I understand it - run under something called a Light Railway Order, where speed is limited to 25 mph, but with out going into too much detail, there is 25 mph, then there is 25 MPH

Armstrong Powerhouse will also be restricted by the same 25 mph & their products are fine.

The GCR are permitted to run non-passenger trains at 50mph as they do with their mail by rail demonstrations regularly.

And for commercial test trains etc., steam is permitted to run at 65mph and diesel at up to 75mph.
