I don't doubt that. That said inaccurate levels could occur if microphones were not in an optimised position to accurately record high and low ends of the audio spectrum. High frequencies are much easier to pick up than lower ones.
I'm not saying that's what occurred, the point is that many, many things can and do go wrong, the same with anything.
I could take a photo and the composition could be perfect but it could also be a little bit out of focus. It would still look good, but not as good as it could be.
The AWS in this case is the focus, the overall sound is the composition. A little bit more depth of field and we'd have the perfect audio canvas.

I take my hat off to you for making TS much better than DTG do but nobody is perfect!

Most of the DRS 37s I've been in have had certain...volume irregularities with their safety equipment. Worst being 605s Vigilance device. Ear splitting, like a burglar alarm. A good reason to be alert and cancel it quickly.
I'm very happy with APs internal sound recordings. You need some good bass to get the best result, as that's where all the good sound is inside a loco; it's all low and dirty. At the upper range it's just whining and rattling.
If anything could be improved, I'd like to see some temperature simulation and fan recordings for the diesels for some good howling fan noise, and some more bangs and rattles. The problem being is you're not likely to get full 90mph wind rush, windows banging, doors rattling and rattling panels effect on a preserved line; and that's not APs fault. If it's not there, it can't be recorded.

The best thing about AP soundpacks is that you don't just get professionally recorded engine and exhaust sounds but also you get decent track joint sounds and bogie run sounds. It's this that raises the bar for realism and sensation of movement. With RSC defaults you just don't get that part at all. Usually there are virtually no running sounds at all, engines and stock just ghost along silently with only the 'pick pock' Kuju track joint to break the silence. AP get this part spot on and it makes all the difference.
Having seen the recent RSC blog showing their sound team recording a Peak loco, it will be interesting to hear what they come up with as their end result. If it's just class 45 engine sounds bolted on to silent bogies and the Kuju track joint then it will be a flop. They need to get the full range of sounds in the bag, not just the engine.

But overall as you said in your original post, the AWS is far too loud. Yes AWS is loud but not deafening which is what it becomes to get accurate levels on the other sounds.
