rwp/rpk files installation

Post by Javiz »

Hi,

I have TS2014 on a new computer and now i can't seem to install rwp/rpk files anymore by just dragging them to the Package Manager 'select package' window. This used to work fine before but now i get a black 'no parking' sign and nothing happens...

The other method, click Install from the PM and select the unzipped rwp/rpk files, still works fine but i find the other method easier and you don't have to unzip the files first.

Does anyone know what might cause this restriction ? Could it be a setting in W7 or TS2014 itself ?...

Any hint/tip will be highly appreciated, thanks much on forehand !

cheers,
jan

Hi Jan,

I never did it that way, but the package manager needs to run as an Admin user. Are you logged on as user with Admin permissions? If not, then this might cause the issue?

Which version of Windows did you use before on the old PC?

Cheers,

I've never used the package manager to install those files, much quicker and easier to use winrar or 7zip, no need to unzip the archives, just double click the rpk/rwp file, choose to open the archive with either winrar or 7zip and then drag the folders across to the ts2014 folder.

Hi there,

By default the TS2014 Utilities.exe program runs with Administrator privileges. It needs this as many users have their default Steam installations under C:/Program Files (x86)/, and in order to write to that directory tree the program requires Admin rights. RSC have setup Utilities.exe to request Admin rights by default.

Now, what happens is that if you are running Windows 7 as a 'normal' user, then your Explorer session will NOT be running with Admin rights, and therefore you are not allowed to drag and drop onto Utilities.exe. To resolve this on Windows 7 you can, if you want, simply completely disable UAC (User Access Control) and thereby run as Admin.

However, if you don't want to disable UAC, or you are running Windows 8, then it is not possible to achieve this via UAC. Instead you need to get hold of the Microsoft Compatibility Toolkit and define a 'shim' for Utilities.exe that allows it to run WITHOUT Admin rights. Note though that this will only work when Steam and TS2014 are installed into a directory other than C:/Program Files (x86)/

I discussed this previously in this thread: http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 5#p1621319

I followed up on that post with this: http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 1&t=130488

If this all sounds a bit too complex, then you might want to try simply to run as Admin when trying to Drag and Drop from explorer.

Hope this might help, rather than hinder.

Good Luck.

Thanks - this helps a lot! (No I'm not the OP but it would be so much easier to run the Utilities w/o admin privileges, and anyway I have installed Steam and TS2014 in another location than the program-files directory -- I never install it there for exactly the reasons you mention.

Thanks very much, gents ! Mistery solved ! 8)

Thank you,JR, for your elaborate explanation !

One of the first things i learned about W7 was this UAC business. Couldn't even get a DVD to run at first. On my old system i had UAC completely disabled but i thought it would be wise to be a little bit more prudent with my new monster machine so i set the slider on the third option instead of turning UAC off completely.

Of course i forgat about that so thanks a million for this great reminder, no more 'no parking' sign when i drag an rwp file onto the Package Manager. Works again like it did before !

I might shove the UAC slider back up a tad again once i have the bulk of my TS2014 stuff re-installed. But it's great to know what caused this 'no parking'sign !

Btw, i'm running with Admin rights of course. Next to TS2014 FSX is also my main toy and without Admin rights you won't get very far re add-ons. And yes, i know about the dreaded C:/Progam Files(x86) folder but i do keep Steam/TS2014 in there because it always worked fine on my old system and i wanted a secondary SSD for FSX only. W7 plus Steam/TS2014 ( and some stuff that have steering wheels.. :) ) is on the primary 500GB SSD and there's a 2TB HDD for all stuff on the side.

Thanks very much again, JR, also for the links, very interesting reading ! 8)

My pleasure, glad you got it sorted out.

I always ran Windows 7 with UAC turned OFF. It was just an annoying nuisance. However, if you move to Windows 8 at some point, then you will have to use those links above to create that Application 'shim'.

In the meantime, Enjoy :D
