Which is why modern trains have a Vigilance device to keep the driver alert

The answer is due to single manning !

Have a look at this map

The lower of the two routes via Warrington Central, table 89, is what DTG are making.

The loco hauled Liverpool - Manchester - Newcastle service used to run via Earlestown to Victoria - it still does with a 185.
What about the services to Hull?
What about the services to Hull??
Currently they start at Manchester Piccadilly.

There was an accident quite a few years ago where the Driver and Secondman on a diesel fell asleep at the controls.
So the single manning argument does not hold water.

The most worrying part of the report was that the driver was instinctively cancelling all vigilance alarms as the train rolled backwards down the hill. No harm was done in the end as the driver eventually snapped out of it and stopped the train. However can you just imagine if there was a Pendolino packed with passengers close behind the freight train? Shudder.

All RAIB reports are viewable for free on the internet, well worth a read for an insight into accidents and incidents on the railways.
Must admit I hadn't seen that report. I do from time to time skim through the reports on an evening when I am away working if there is nothing else going on. Must go look for that one.

Same with the AAIB reports for aircraft - some interesting occurrences documented.

It's in the 2011 reports titled 'Shap run back' or similar. The train reached a staggering 51mph rolling backwards and travelled over 2 miles. Well worth a read of the very detailed report.

I wonder if DTG will use The Emirates Stadium Asset in ECML as Old Trafford in this route :D

That'll go down well with any Arsenal/Man Utd fans who will drive this route

Exactly, that's why I'm hoping they're not lazy and they do actually model Old Trafford, even though I'm no fan of the stadium with me being an Evertonian 8)

It will be interesting to see if they do or not but I don't really think it would matter too much if they didn't.

Hmmm, have to disagree there, OT is a major landmark along that line and replacing it for an inadequate substitution (excuse the pun) or even omitting it would leave a sense of loss of realism on the line for me. We are not talking about a 200mile route here were every landmark will be difficult to replicate, we're talking about a small to medium stretch of mainline, heck it would be like using Lime St with the Kings X asset.

Also, I was thinking last night, I know some people have said Lime St will make or break for them but I think Piccadilly is going to be the one for me, yes I've been waiting to see Lime St on TS since day one, but let me explain.

Trains for this route tend to use Platform 13/14, what I call the outside platforms, now are DTG just going to fully model these and leave the under roof platforms (1-11 is it? Crewe, London services etc.) bare? What would be good is if they modelled upto Longsight depot, that way it would open up future workshop route possibilities onwards to Crewe, Leeds etc.

Anyway, going to be interesting.

I mentioned to a pal the other day that I hoped someone will model some shopping trolleys, old washers and dead cats, so we can make the approaches to Lime Street as realistic as possible  .

(Not a dig at Lime Street and/or Liverpool by the way, the northern approach to Sheffield is/was exactly the same  ).

Cheers,

To stereotype scouser scallies, wheel-less cars on bricks would be nice....

(NB: I love Liverpool, there's an awful lot more to it than just a big river and 2 football teams)
