If the JT one is basically just a reskin of the default stock, then in theory it should be pretty easy to edit it's .bin file(s) to point to the AP sounds---if anybody's feeling adventurous that is :)

Which AP HST soundpack do you have? - I have the AP Valenta sounds and it uses them. But nevertheless the bin file does not have Cab occlusion.

So.....has the AP installer put files in the folders for the JT variant, or does the .bin simply point to a class 43 that has had the sounds applied?

The latter. In fact, I have the Valenta sound installed many years ago but the JT HST came with the N2E package.

I tried to apply the AP Valenta sounds to the JT HST with RWtools and ended up with a silent HST, would this suggest that the .bin file could be edited to make them work? :-?

That's how it normally works....just how did you go about 'trying' to do it? a silent HST suggests an incorrect file path, something that's very easy to inadvertently do but nothing that can't be fixed.

.........................Well, I fired up RWtools/edit assets, then filtered the JT HST's, added to the list, then selected update sounds/apply 43/HST sounds. Probably totally wrong methodology, hence no tunes! Reverted back to default for now, but would like the Valenta sounds on all my HST's, however non PC this may be.

Easiest way would be to compare the .bin files of a Valenta fitted HST and the JT one, and then edit the JT one to match...

...OR...

as Richard officially unofficially wrote a few days ago, copy the Valenta fitted .bin file to the JT folder and edit the descriptive names etc & file paths to suit the new location.

Since the AP Valenta sounds work for me without any edit, I have ckecked one of the JT HST bin-files:

\railworks\Assets\JustTrains\HST\RailVehicles\Diesel\HST\XC\Class43\class43_xc.bin

Its sound settings refer to:

\Kuju\RailSimulator\Audio\RailVehicles\Diesel\Class 43\Class 43 Engine Sound.xml

which in turn contains the AP Valenta information.

I only had to add the cab occlusion.

I only have a Class 43 Engine Sound MTU.bin and a Class 43 Engine Sound.bin file in that folder, no Class 43 Engine Sound.xml.

Same file Trev, it's just that in .bin files the sound file (and all other .bin files called for) are referenced as being .xml files

If the file ending is bin or xml makes no difference to the simulator. In fact, xml is the readable file and bin the compiled one.

Andy,
it looks like the JT model merely references the default sounds so in theory it should sound exactly like the Kuju variant.
That begs the question, "does your Kuju HST have the Valenta sounds applied?"

Just out of interest, does anybody have a list of which sounds would be most appropriate/prototypical to which HST livery/date period?
