Another good 'educational' video of an edited in-cab ride on a Class 87 (87022 working 1M44):-

Make sure your speakers/sound system is turned up... :D

Producers could do with a map as well. Chirk is in Wales, in the County of Wrexham. Not Cheshire. Although Shropshire is only 1 mile away, might have forgiven them that one :)

well finally bought the route, not done much yet on it Lancaster to Oxenholm and Oxonholm to Preston, really impressed with it, just love the working neutral sections although i think i need a bit of practise with them. Another fantastic job Keith has done, can not wait for your next route. But think you also deserve a rest from route building as having read the interview post keith does have a family and a fulltime job and delivers outstanding routes.

Once again a big thank for making such a fantastic route

I guess we are all avoiding mentioning the obvious elephant in the room accident that recently (relatively) took place on this route? And then of course there is Tebay (3 incidents over the years?)
If only all problems on the big railway could simply be TAB'd past...

Does anyone know how I can stop the points at Shap and Carnforth southbound switching at the very last minute in free roam? the one at Shap stays set for the mainline until you are past the AWS for the protecting signal and puts you into the loop... at 80mph.
The one at Carnforth is much the same but puts you wrong road.

Cheers

If I'm reading that right it sounds like the freight train was rolling backwards down Shap at 50mph??

Wow that's frightening. One thing that train simulator has taught me is that driver fatigue must be a gigantic problem ticking away. I drive the simulated version for fun as a hobby but after 9pm, any scenario longer than half an hour and I'm nodding off and bashing my head on the monitor windscreen!
Now imagine having to drive the real thing every day/night for hours on end with no secondman to keep you alert?

At least you can open a window and feel a blast of air on the real thing

I was watching a train documentary where drivers would start at 8am and would go to bed at 7pm the night before.

The worst night shift must be in a Voyager. I've been in the cab of one of those and it's like being in an isolated cocoon. No proper side window that you can stick your melon out of, sat way back from the windscreen, heavily tinted windows, no engine noise, no company, just the gentle hum of air con and a big squishy comfy throne to curl up on!

Yawn, I've made myself feel tired thinking about it!

You can't do that forever though. I'm sure some train drivers have young kids or busy lives outside of work?

Fatigue is also one of the number one concerns for airline pilots and that's far more heart thumping and taxing than plodding up Shap at 35mph alone in a Shed at 2am! At least pilots are also guaranteed a wingman to keep them awake, alert and cover any mistakes. Although saying that there was a report on the news recently about 2 British pilots both falling asleep at the same time on the same plane in mid-flight!

Driver Fatigue is certainly taken very seriously within all TOCs. We have various safeguards built in. However Passenger Drivers don't face the same type of fatigue as Feight Train Drivers. The environment is totally different. Also remember Train Drivers don't have nice flight computers with programmed routes and procedures all at Hand. Next time you are flying along on the West or East Coast in thick Fog remember the Driver is working entirely from memory, Route Knowledge!
