Over here in Belgium they have just started broadcasting a reality TV show called Railroad - Alaska. Last night's episode featured a 6500 ton 76 wagon train heading North from Seward to Anchorage and the passenger carrying flag train heading into Talkeetna. It was interesting watching the freight train heading down "The Loop" a 3% gradient where the track does a few back and forth loops to get to the bottom, they can see the whole train from the bottom snaking back up to the top of the gradient. The engine is moving towards the camera, the next section up is heading to the right, and up top the tail of the train is heading left. After the descent they have to stop and free the seized on brakes and let them cool down before they can head off into Anchorage. They went into a bit about track maintenance and how they have to clear avalanches in the winter and the ice build up on the track.
Searching here I found a locked thread about the route but never found out if it was ever released or what, was it only ever for MSTS?

Re: Alaska Railroad
it might be worth looking on Railworks America

Another line in the "sort of" area is the Fraser and Cariboo route

Yes, it's Canada instead of Alaska but it might give you a route something like the Alaska Railroad.
