A part from showing headlight beams and rain drops on the windscreen and shadows, what else does TSX on do ?

TSX on.

TSX off.
TSX off looks so much better.

How about a comparison shot from the sunny side of the train? TSX makes things seem so much more realistic, running on a route with overhead wires and their associated shadows shows this very well, and it also gives you cab lighting effects which don't work with TSX disabled I believe. Performance is obviously much better, but it also means that things such as decals don't work (which I found out whilst developing some) so you miss out on many fine Class 170 liveries.

With TSX on you lose the sharpness of distant features including the trees by the track.

Now I am confused, If you have it on does it not give you distortion on the cab window on some loco's ???, in other words you cannot see out.
So I have off for that reason after reading some post on the subject.

Not that I've noticed, to what loco's are you referring?

It isn't at all common but there are a few locos - the HST buffers and DT Terriers for two - where you can't see through the windows with TSX on.

Some shadows appear with TSX on but not when off and sometimes it looks a bit flat with TSX off
With TSX on

TSX off

A downside with TSX on some routes the track gets 'redrawn' as the train goes along with a flicker effect.
On WCML-N there are black center lines in the points.

Haven't tried it with TSX off but the 'stripy points' issue on WCMLN is also present with TSX on. It can however be very effectively removed courtesy of Dave Dewhurst and UKTS file ID 30486.

I get a much better picture and better fps with TSX off - after all, picture quality is everything! Very interested to see what TS2014 brings.

I couldn't go without TSX on, as I can afford to have my settings on max I really get a natural environment look from the sim with the TSX shaders and lighting. Distant objects that seem out of focus are indeed so, as you probably have the DOF setting on, which I usually leave off... As for the windows you can't see out of on the likes of the HST buffer pack, its because they use a TSX incompatible shader for the glass which is no longer supported in TSX mode, which results in the weird mirror effect. I think someone fixed it by changing the shader in the GEO file once, but I don't remember.
Overall I find legacy mode to be a bit sterile, the lack of shadows was always something I missed out on in the RW days, and I saw a huge difference in atmosphere once I got TS2012 installed.

As I bought WCML-N at the weekend (yeah I know, just slightly behind everyone else

) I have had to deal with the windscreen issue on the buffers HST:
This is the thread explaining how to fix it DIY:

This is a file uploaded to the library with the fixes already done:

As mentioned in a previous post I run at max settings with TSX on (3x3)@3400x2100,I enjoy crisp clear defined lines no jaggies with super smooth gameplay-
but can't justify the amount of money spent to achieve this, this is one of the reasons I own a 4 gig Nvidia card.Railworks often eats into 2.8 gig of the 4 gig,
Arma 3 eats about 3 gig,but enjoy super smooth gameplay.

I love the way that all textures on engines look with TSX on, compared to how everything looks with TSX off.
Unfortunately my current hardware doesn't allow to have decent framerates with TSX on, but I do prefer the looks of it.
For sharpness, I believe that there's a few ways to patch this, for instance the FXAA disabler helps making things sharper.

Thanks for the info about the patch - and to Dave who created it

I find that with TSX off the distant picture is much clearer (possibly due to FXAA on in TSX) but with TSX off in some routes you will see very bright washed out platforms and tracksides.
At night TSX ON gives a much better idea of what is happening whereas TSX off looks pretty black.
I get more shimmering on points and OHW with TSX on than with TSX off.
AA, AF and other effects can be "forced" much better, say via NVidia Inspector in TSX off. With TSX on it can be tricky often ending up with 4 mini screens.
Just my observations.
