Is there a way to bulk reinstall after validation

Post by meonia »

Over the years I've acquired a large number of enhancements for RW. When TS2013 does an upgrade or I do a validation what used to be a job of just a few minutes to reinstall the enhancement is now becoming a much larger task. Choosing between zip, rar, rwp, exe, msi files, having to keep accepting the terms or looking for the same folder over and over again in the directory to select an rwp file when using package manager etc. is becoming a real chore. Its ok when I have to do it once in a long while but recently there has been a number of times when I've had to validate a few times within a couple of weeks and that's when I start getting frustrated. (Why does TS2013 keep loosing or corrupting files in the first place - its not a professionally robust program in my opinion if it does that).

So the point of this is: Does anyone know of an application that can bulk reinstall rwp files ... they don't usually rquire you to accept terms, and I doubt it but is there a way to bulk reinstall the other file types with automating the accept check box/button. I've seen professionals set up dozens of computers in an office all at the same time by running a script and so I don't think the idea of doing this for Train Simulator is too far fetched.

I wont hold my breath for an answer but there may be a few ideas out there that can speed up reinstalling enhancements after validation.

Cheers,
Mike.

This may be of interest/use to you:

I have not used it myself, but it seems to have received very positive feedback from users

Mike
Over on Railworks America is an app by "Doc" Machinist Lisboa that does that, with 2-clickz! http://railworksamerica.com/forum/viewt ... f=6&t=5383 it needs some setting up but works well (I now have 10GB in my files).

The alternate method:

Create a folder say called "REINSTALL" and in that folder copy the "railworks'.exe" file (some installers won't work if they don't see the railworks.exe file).
Now create 2 subfolders one called "ASSETS" and one called "CONTENT"
Now every time that you install anything to you working "Railworks" game folder you also install it in the "Reinstall" folder. Most add-ons will install into the correct folders.
You can also install into the "Assets and content" folders manually by creating the appropriate folder tree(s). For instance you can do this with .rwp files - extracting them with something like 7-zip and copying the extracted files into the "Assets" and/or "Content" folders (or extracting them directly into these folders).

Now when TS2013 is updated or you verify the game cache all you do is copy the Assets and/or Content folder(s) into your working Railworks folder, Windows will want to know if you want to "Merge" the folders - YES and then choose overwrite when asked to do so. That's it!!

Once set up Doc's method is pretty foolproof.

A really big thank you guys, or as one of the respondents in Railworks America said: "Its an answer to my prayers".

Actually its amazing how simple the whole concept is, so simple that it never even entered my mind as I was locked into thinking it was going to be a complex solution

But surely the question is 'Why do you have to do any validations with TS2013?' - I have had TS2013 installed here as an upgrade from Rail Simulator/Rail Works/TS2012 for the past 4 years or so - I have virtually all of the DLC and have never found it necessary to do a validation from Steam.

I spend a lot of time route building and taking apart .bin files etc but everything still works fine. As far as I can see, TS2013 is a fairly robust program assuming you have a modern computer/operating system capable of handling it.

I'm not arguing (just explaining why I'm right).

Like you Mike, I been making a route since Railsimulator first came out and I've done lots of bin file alterations etc. Actually none of my routes ever caused a problem, its the Route editor that causes the occasional problem. In this last week I've had weird stuff like suddenly all the lights stop shining or I couldn't highlight anything in the editor, and although I dreaded the thought, after repeated attempts I've had to resort to a validation which has worked every time.

I'm running an i7 computer with a very big graphics card and oodles of memory so gaming, simulating and acad are not a problem, even in 3D. Sometimes the file indexes on the hard drive get out of whack and have to be checkdisked but I wonder why its always RW that gets hit with a broken file and no other programs on the same drive? I have problem at the moment that probably won't need validation but you never know ... every time I use the Edit Route function in the menu, regardless of the route, it comes up as night time. It may be the enhanced lighting pack I installed or something the game does after a certain combo of keystrokes or maybe just some RW function not working and requiring a validation. :-)

I really cant say why things happen the way they do but regardless I still get immense pleasure from TS2013 so I don't mind living with it.

Cheers,

Mike.
