renaming files from default assets?

Post by class1987 »

Hi everyone as I'm doing a repaint on the JGA wagon and overwriting the default fake livery, just wanted to know is there away to rename the files without the assets disapearing in the game?

Copy the texture file(s) you've edited and rename it with .bak at the end. If steam overwrites delete the original and replace it with that one, minus the .bak

The displayed name of an asset in game is independent of the file name, and is determined in the .bin file so you need to edit that particular field. I'm not at a PC for a while so can't get specific but it's near the beginning of the .bin

If your updating the default then only a game verify or an update to the JGA will wipe your skin. You can just keep a backup of the skin to drop in if this happens. Doing it this way will mean if anyone makes a scenario with JGA's they will have your livery. Cloning and reskinning is a much more involved process including the editing of bin files and the end user moving shape files around as you can't give payware models away.

Hi, it means editing the wagons .bin file, so it would be worth having a read round of the forums to find out how to do it. You really need to research before diving in as a dodgy bin file will cause an SBHH (something bad has happened) message!

I really think you would have been better off if you had cloned the wagon to repaint it, leaving the default wagon safe and intact. I'm sure you could then swap the wagons using RWTools in the scenarios you want to play.

I'd second that, particularly as this is proving to be more involved than you imagined. It really would be worthwhile to have a rethink and put the files you've altered back to their original state---you did make a backup, didn't you?--and start again on a copy.
