a straight copy of files is more than adequate for back up purposes.
That's reassuring!

So, regarding the move - as per MGD11's first post?

Basically, yes......copying over those files and folders and then running steam.exe builds up a new installation; Steam may decide you're installing on a different PC and ask you to confirm that it's what you want to do, and if so you'll get a code by e-mail which you'll need to enter to complete the process---make sure you know which e-mail address you signed up to Steam with!!! (if you have multiple addresses of course)

By copying the files/folders you'll still retain that oh-so-important backup copy of your stuff in case things do go awry again, but that's very unlikely.

Hi Gary,
as an aside, and apologies for hijacking the thread. I have recently bought a new laptop with very good remote hard drive storage. Though my main desktop PC has TS2013 and all the associated DLC/add-ons in a specified back-up folder, I am looking to install Steam and TS2013 onto my new lap-top/remote hard drive. Is that possible? I cannot recall if there is an alternative thread for this and I will search again.

The 2nd installation is to enable me to drive my trains while I am away from home on business or holiday etc.

If you mean you have an external hard drive connected via a USB port, I wouldn't recommend it---the transfer rate across USB may not be up to the mark when running 'intensive' routes---nothing to stop you trying though, as you can install Steam/TS2013 on as many computers as you like; the only restriction is that you can only log in to Steam using one at a time. If it didn't work out as you'd like/hoped it's easy enough to move it on to the lappy's built-in drive, so all you'd lose would be time (and maybe some hair :) )

Use the same procedure as the 'move steam' instructions---https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -YUBN-8129---if you can get the lappy and the PC networked it would make copying your assets over easier, but you could do the job by just connecting the external drive to the PC and copying that way.

Thanks for the advice Gary...
The laptop is a refurbished Compaq (Windows 8) item purchased quite cheaply I have to say from Ruby Murrys... It has over 600gig on board memory, which assuming TS2013 is the only game I am looking to put on it (apart from the Hellfire train bashing simulator), should be enough for core routes and a few selected add-ons. I need to check the graphics card however to assess whether I am wasting my time with it.

Using my wireless network at home, I was a little shocked to discover that Steam was threatening a 23 hours download of my current TS2013 game and DLC... Still, got to get in and drive some time...

Cheers

asically, yes......copying over those files and folders and then running steam.exe builds up a new installation
I must still be mising something here...

Copied Steam Apps and Steam.exe over to the new drive, but running Steam.exe just opens the Steam website...?

Is that it?
Is it safe to try Railworks.exe from the new location? - I don't want to trigger another full reinstall

Have I missed a step?

ETA - The Steam Library tab under "Settings" still shows the game installed under the old library location (E:\)

gptech wrote:Just a thought....but if you followed the instructions for creating libraries in different locations Steam may apply that setting to any new installation. Make sure you have good backups of your goodies and reset Steam to have games in the default locations.
How did you start Steam.exe?

I ran the exe file from the new drive locn. Desktop shortcut still points to the original Steam.exe for the old installation.

When I double clicked the exe file it just opened the Steam website.

Make sure you copied the right file-----Steam.exe opens the Steam launcher.
If it still refuses to behave download the Steam installer again, run it but install to your new location and when it's built up the games folder structure just copy your assets and routes over-----no need to let it download everything again.

Well, I appear to have two working copies of TS ? :o , complete with all DLC and WIP route...

What I'm not sure of at the mo is whether its all routing back to the original install (launched game using the Railworks.exe on the new drive. Have made some route edits, so next time I'm on the PC I'll check to see if the minor edit has been applied to one or both versions

Yeah, you'll have multiple instances installed-------handy if you keep one permanently offline then you're never locked out. Each instance should be self contained, as you played about with library locations though you're wise to check.

Well, when I went back in to my "old" install, it included the route edits that should only have been on the "new" drive...

exe filefrom the new location was opening the old install only.

I seem to have fixed this...

Renamed the Steam and Railworks sub-directorires as Steam_E and Railworks_E (E:\ being the old host drive)

THEN, when I ran Steam.exe from the new drive, it automatically populated D:\ with the Steam account info, requested I enter an email code and synced TS2013 to that drive

Hopefully I am now able to continue my route build / other DLC installation without being constrainedby HD capacity!

And an update from me -
Managed to successfully download the core game and my Steam DLC library over the weekend. Had a sneeky test before heading out to work yesterday morning and have a nice drive of the latest Class 101 out of Darlington in the pish.

Frame rates are a little lower than I get from my main gaming tower, but very passable. Will have a play with TSX/graphics settings and find my 'laptop compromise.'

Thanks for your help Gary.
