Patching a route

Post by 37114 »

Afternoon all,

I've been messing about this morning dealing with one of my biggest gripes with it, that being the missing portals on the Oxted, West Croydon, Tattenham Corner and Catheram branches as well as putting portals on each of the platforms at Victoria and Brighton. Everything works a treat and by doing this it makes creating realistic scenarios much, much simpler. I would love to release this to the community but have know idea how to. Is there any simple way of creating a patch that would allow this?

Many thanks,

Rich

It can be done, you need to export the changed files for the route. I'm not sure whether the packager system would work as I'm not 100% certain that they would over-write the originals. You would probably need to put them in a zip file using the correct paths or use a batch installer. Remember to make provision should anybody want to un-install.

Probably the reason this isn't a popular change is that scenarios made using these portals wouldn't work on unmodified versions of the route, which could cause some confusion and frustration.

I don't really find major issues with the lack of portals in London-Brighton - I just finish branch trains at platforms or create a marker within the scenario for them. At Victoria I just reverse them out and send them out to a portal if need be.

Can portals be added as scenario specific objects?

Shame, that would make for an elegant solution though as you've said there are plenty of places to route to---after all when service passes you and is representing a train to Brighton it doesn't actually have to go there--------you're unlikely to reverse to check!

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I would like them there just for the extra flexibility they would bring, especially on the platforms at Brighton and Victoria. I try to recycle my scenarios as much as possible as they're a hell of a lot of work and the additional portals would make this really easy.

Is this not the same as Fodda's Tunnel Occlusion's? - Surely it's the same thing, World / Route edits.

If Fodda could export the edited tiles for people to overwrite their own tiles, it must be possible?

The only problem i see is, people could only install one edit without overwriting the other - So the portals would have to added to a World that already includes Fodda's Tunnel mods :-?

However, i'm not sure how useful a portal mod is - the big scenario writers couldn't use them, because it would mean they would have to rely on the end user having installed the mod, which i don't think people like AP or even Rosgar would be willing to do
Why couldn't the steam loco sit down? - Because he had a tender behind.
