My personal experience with an ATI card, and train simulator 2013, (Radeon 7770 HD) gave me no end of problems, so much so that I sold the card and bought an EVGA 650 Ti. I was spending more time trying to fix issues that the card was giving me rather than spend my time enjoying the simulator! I was disappointed because the card was nice and otherwise performed really well, especially so with Rise of Flight which I enjoy playing. The Nvidia card fixed all my problems though and I dont have a single issue now with TS2013.

When you apply FXAA, MSAA, SSAA etc, the higher you go, the more smooth the image will become (and sort of, lightly blurred in a way, the higher you go). As you smooth a jaggedy line, such as the overhead wires, the line becomes thinner. At 1080p, your screen has more pixels to play with to make a smooth, thin line, at longer distances. I find that, depending on the resolution that my screen is set, will show the lines a further distance away, but the higher you have your anti-aliasing is set, the sooner the thin line will appear/disappear. I notice it with grills/mesh on some locos, and some fences in-game where the true lines aren't visible until you are a set distance away, close enough for the screen to resolve the thin lines. When you turn the anti-aliasing off, you'll find you have a much sharper and clearer image, but more jagged edges to look at. The anisotropic filtering will make surface textures in game much more detailed, I don't think that they would have any affect on the overhead lines.

I know exactly where you are coming from with the distances though, and I do think that they are working on improving all aspects of the game for the future, but all the anti-aliasing setting etc and far view distances cost performance, and they have to try and get the game to perform well enough to play on various system, cheap or expensive.

I hope you get it looking as best as you can though, but I think that your ATi card + TS2013 will drive you around the bend, as I found I could never get settings that I applied outside of TS2013 to apply in game, with the ATi software or other programs.

Sounds encouraging to me? They are working to improve it and many other aspects of the sim, Rome wasn't built in a day, etc.?
