Won't run in Windows 8

Hey all,

anyone else come across this problem?

'Upgraded' to Windows 8 and now RS2013 won't run at all. Never had a problem like this, so I've tried Verifying the Game Cache which came back with 400-odd file problems and re-downloaded those (I'm sure these would have been AP sound files anyway) but still no-go.

I initially get the "Launching" box to appear but when this goes nothing else happens - it's just like it doesn't run in Win8 but I know others are working OK so I guess that's not the case. I'm a little stumped if I'm honest...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you tried right clicking on the shortcut and choosing RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR? I believe W8 may be strangling it. Hope this helps/works for you. Mark

Hi Richy

Whereabouts on your hard drive do you have RS2013 installed?

Ash

Hi.

Not sure what the problem is in this case but I have it running on win 8 and it doesnt need to be run as administrator. I installed win 8 on a clean hard drive instead of upgrading and then reinstalled railworks. Everything has worked well so far.

Hi.

thanks all for trying to help.

Seems there is a DirectX problem with my install of Win8 as FSX isn't working either... :-?

I'll keep digging on the internet to see if I can fix it without a full re-install of Windows...

Thanks again!

If you look in the Railworks folder you will find a folder called Install. Within this is the DirectX9 folder. Try running DXsetup.exe in this folder, which should install the required DirectX components for Railworks. If this fails, try running vcredist_x86.exe found in the Install folder. I had similar problems to you and running vcredist solved them.

Len

Yes, having seen a similar problem some years ago when using the original RailSimulator, I remembered this solved it for me then.

Sadly this time there was no change when I tried it.

Hi,

thanks, yes tried that already and, eventhough it did change/add some files, it didn't fix the prob.

I think my Win8 install could be corrupt...

As I asked earlier, whereabouts on your hard drive do you have RS2013 installed?

Sorry Ash, as I've already decided that it's my Win8 install (as other games are also non-playable) I didn't think to reply...

All of my programs are installed on a separate drive; F:

Physically separate or on a partitioned single HDD?

Sorry Richy, the reason I asked was just to ascertain whether you had installed it to the "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86) folders. If so, that might have explained your problem.

Physical disk.

Don't think I've partitioned a drive since 2005-ish :o

Even then I only really used partitioning to have multi-os systems, but with VM's being more technologically advanced than they used to be, I don't even do this now.

No need to apologise, Ash.

I'm grateful for any help offered (but I do really think that the Win8 install is a dud...) :(
