Well after the "publishing issues" it finally got released eh, well I bought it regardless of its price, its not particularly to much of a issue and the price tag is pretty much expected from RSC these days, I will note that there should have been the LNER livery included to it wouldn't have been particularly hard for RSC to have done but whatever its there choice at the end of the day.
So we have the Robinson O4, probably one of the most common mixed traffic 2-8-0s to ever grace Woodhead, usually seen in double or triple formations aswell as singular on lighter workings they were pretty much in use for a great deal of the lines steam career stemming as far back as the Grand Central days and its first designs originating in 1911 and a fair amount of the class reached end of service to 1960. A popular locomotive with crews even with its open cab design and was overall a excellent locomotive with over 400 built over its lifetime.
So we now have this locomotive in Railworks, have RSC delivered? That question going to be answered in the following:
The O4 represented in the pack is one of the later designs featuring the thinner boiler while retaining the original cab. A quick look around the locomotive shows pretty accurate model work, the body of the locomotive doesn't look off and has all the appropriate O4 shape and design associated with the later editions, plenty detail has been put in and referencing to actual photos it looks like everything is where it should be and looks the right shape. Cab has also been done well and seems like everything is where it should be, its a require head out of cab to see along the locomotive, the Robinsons weren't built for there cab views.
Effects on the locomotive include large gouts of cyclinder cocks blow off, steam release from the actual cyclinders both under and jetting out on piston action of the connection rods, both are regulated by the regulator and become more cloudy depending on how far you put the regulator up. A double gout of steam is also present escaping from under the cab area flowing backward under the tender and steam effects are present on the safety valves which also to note will explode upwards in a thin long gout when the valve pops like real world examples.
Edit: Just noticed another effect while running another scenario, when the water is being pumped to the boiler there is water leakage from under the cab from one of the pipes.
Also to note, proper and correctly placed sander effects which are sand coloured and not steam coloured, huzzah.
Lighting effects include a subdued but effective light up of lamps on both front and back of the locomotive, the white lamps on the front just barely light up the buffers and red paintwork. Someone at RSC seems to also have taken note after being told "stop adding the nuclear glow to steam engines", the Robinson O4 has a subtle but effect yellow-ish firebox glow which lights up the cab nicely but is not overpowered and only shines out onto the track next to it.
Sound wise Matt's hand in them is noticable to the extreme and its probably one of the best RSC released steam locomotive soundsets to date, Matt is I would say the Armstrong Powerhouse of steam locomotive soundsets. Sounds are excellent, there is certainly no question in that and they have been recorded well and correctly, comparing to the video I posted earlier in the thread the chuff beat is near identical as your going to get in a digital version, it has the traditional split 1st and 2nd valve effect which Matt has been using on steam locomotives where the beat is lower on lower % and higher and more powerful on higher %. Cyclinder cocks interact correctly with alterations to the regulator and feature the whoosh-hiss whoosh-hiss associated with the piston action and rotation of the drive wheels. Also to note while at speed there is a regularly hiss-hiss-hiss associated with the piston action and wheel rotation in the cylinder area. A loud and prominent safety valve is also available and also when the regulator is off proper rod clanking can be heard. To note the chuff beat is regular and in sync with wheel rotation and is properly smoothed as the locomotive goes up in speed and sounds great.
Ok, so there is one negative for the soundset, and its unfortunately for me the whistle. It doesn't sound quite right, I believe it is correct, however to me it feels...oh I don't know like it belongs on a saddle tank or a narrow guage locomotive rather than a 2-8-0, maybe I'm just to used to big noisy stainer hooters and the shrill GWR whistles or the chime whistles of LNER pacifics, but to me it feels just a smidge out of place or not meaty enough.
So what is like to drive? Its a pleasure to drive as a steam locomotive and can handle its loads given to it in the scenarios provided, granted the actual O4 hauled alot more than what is present in the scenarios and it also featured in double heading or tripling heading with bankers on the back to for some loads. It certainly would be more at home with the smaller coal wagons and PO coal wagons aswell as long mixed freight formations, it isn't uncommon to see in Woodhead photos of O4s pulling 30-40 wagon loads and the double and triple formations pulling 45-50, weather or not it can do that in game I'm not sure as of yet, but it seems powerful enough.
Is it worth buying? It depends on ones own opinion, it only has one livery and a few scenarios which are in requirement of a additional route so some might feel this is lack of value for money, but on the flip side its accurately modelled, has a excellent soundset and is completely appropriate and correct for the scenarios included, it can replace the 8Fs which were practically not even seen on Woodhead and with a prototypical locomotive and can finally give the Woodhead some correct steam traction alongside the V2s and the B1 to follow from RSC in the future, the O4 also really isn't out of touch running alongside the 76 and 77s as they were still in service right up to the late 50s.
At the end of the day I'm happy with the purchase(after finally been able to purchase the damn thing, thanks steam

)and while its not super feature intensive its got all the steam effects, correct soundset and is fun to drive and acts and drives like a steam locomotives so for me that is just fine.
