Absolutely, this is a fantastic result for one day's work. It will only get better with practice, so this is extremely promising indeed as it shows you have alot of potential to pull off some cracking reskins. I look forward to the finished effort, please keep posting progress! :D

 I wouldn't pour to much praise on my work thus far, I've not been able to replicate the boiler's result on the other parts, I may have potentially flunked getting that first one right, and well I'm not doing anything particularly fancy, just using the smudge tool in gimp toggled to burn mode and just running the brush over the coloured areas, eventually it goes to black, simple way of doing things I know, but I've not been able to achieve a simple colour swap from olive to black. That would probably be the easy part of fiddling with stuff, the rest is trying to get it to save the .dds file correctly without it causing the really shiny/polished look or causing some wierd stretching.

I did just spend another hour or so on the other files and I think I have a idea where I've messed up the process, culprit in my case probably not removing the transparency mask after i've done everything to return the texture to its original really transparent state when you first open the file, I believe that is what I did with the boiler before saving, I'll see if that is the case tomorrow.

Worse comes to worse I can just wait for the reskin kit from meshtools which will probably be bit more newbie friendly than what I'm ultimately doing :D

Anyway its been interesting messing with all this kinda stuff again, can't say I'd do it for a day job, but maybe as a once in awhile hobby :drinking: So yes, I'm somehow expecting a reply post to be some over simple method to everything I've done and I'll be all "oh..that is easier" and be done in half the time

Just to let everyone know if they haven't yet seen it, there is a reskinning policy in the manual also instructions about using different child objects etc. It seems most of you already know about it, but those who don't I recommend you check it out. :)

I could let you have the PSD file for these if you can use them. The cycling Lion can face forward on each side of the loco if you want, but the later emblems always have to be the same, so the Lion on one side has to look to the rear. Some technicality of heraldry that prevents an heraldic device being reversed I think.
I would advise toning down the colours too.

Ah my apologises Mike, have read through it and have probably overstepped it slightly, wasn't really intending to, was more the lines of asking a few questions and showing pics of where I was stumped on it since normally other posters have a idea of my numpty mistakes I'm doing and can point out faster than reading text. I'll hold back on any more pics untill I've figured more stuff out and dropped a mail though to be quite honest I'm unlikely to release for upload since that side is abit beyond me, I've got it displayed in the editor with the right name, but that is about as far as it goes for me in that regards :o

Thanks briyeo, I can probably just work with those jpegs and scale them down, for my personal use it will probably do the trick without to much issue, also thanks for the information about the emblems to, its abit hard to find photographs which show both sides of the loco with the emblems on, so that information is useful to know.

That means we can't call it a 'ferret' either then..... it's now promoted to lion rampant

It's wonderful that the more you 'get into' something the more you learn about other *supposedly* un-related stuff.

I'd hazard a guess that the heraldry stuff stems from older mythos and beliefs of the two headed bird/eagle, one which looked always to the past and one which looked always to the future thus reflecting and being all knowning. Being the emblem came out of a era of quite abit of british national pride and the lion being a symbol of Briton I can only assume it was the Lion which looks forward to the future of the empire and backwards upon the past of the empire, which if you break down into simpler terms even more you got forward and backward, so quite fitting for a railways logo in a way.

And, in my eyes anyway, much nicer to look at than 2 arrows.....(despite being firmly stuck in the BR Blue era)

Rampant? tut tut. It is actually A Lion statant (Old French: "standing") all four feet on the ground, usually with the fore paws together. To be correct it would seem the lion should always face to the left. You will find early crest logos following both formats on old loco photos, this is because BR were suddenly found out to be misusing the heraldic device and told to correct it, probably by the College of Arms most likely. Can anyone put a date to when the order for lions to face left was made?

I have to agree Gary, I find it all quite interesting.

I never pass a railway related logo or crest without taking a photo these days, now this one does look a bit rampant

After having vowed not to buy this route on the basis that I'm not into steam nor shunting, my attention has been awoken by the emergence of a fruity looking class 37 scenario in the library today!!

A week or so on, are people still enjoying this route? Reviews have not been very forthcoming. I'm back on the fence and ready to be swayed either way....

What are you apologising for for? Nothing to apologise for, I was just pointing it out if you or if someone else had plans for a release. I have no issues with what you were doing, feel free to continue. :)

Ah, okies i might have misunderstood your last post slightly ;).

Well since I've the ok to post a few more screenies, I'll pop a few up at end of this post. Anyway, in my last post I had mentioned about issues of everything coming out like someone had run a floor buffer over it, turns out it was the process of finalising the texture file prior to saving with Gimp. Simply put, with thanks from Acorn for his link to the other thread I was able to get the transparent texture file to show the black background and also bring up the coloured image correctly, however once I finished up what I basically had not done is untick disable layer mask which returned the image to the transparent look when you first open the .dds file in gimp and had not merged the layers again. So after abit of fiddling and doing the process correctly the appropriate texture files worked and we got the following results:

Overall I know its not a perfect result nore is it 100% accurate, the emblem probably could do with swapping out to the late era and the black in areas around teh cabs and under the boiler is alittle to dark and slightly obscures detail 68013 probably didn't look like that at any point either and the numbering on the cab side, I suppose its abit of artistic freedom  But on the other hand, as a excise of learning and fiddling with the how-tos of doing reskins for railworks I think its a success and I've not encountered any SBHHs from the process so I think that is fairly good. I think I might go back and remove the cab side numbering under the builder plate, but we'll see.

I will state clearly that I don't plan to release this reskin, as I'm not 100% happy with it, know it isn't accurate and I'm not confident in repackaging or finishing off the appropriate editting of other files which are needed to have it display correctly in the scenario loco windows (it still shows as olive green WD for example), so sorry to say but people will have to wait either for the woodhead version to come or another reskinner.

As a closing point, while it seems abit complex to do a reskin I've been able to achieve the result above probably within the span of maybe 5-6hours of off and on work on it and I've had to start from the olive green textures again a few times in that span of time, I think in hindsight the J94 texture files are probably quite easy to reskin compared to what people have encountered in the past, eventually the paint kit for the J94 should make the process even easier, so what I've done with it all and how I did it probably won't be needed or be alot easier to do. Equally there is probably alot I could do with learning in Gimp and graphics editting in general, since A. I've forgotten alot since 2006-2008 and B. programs and techniques have evolved alot since then.

A good and fun experience either way and I would encourage anyone else if you have interest in trying then give it a go and see how things turn out, you only really need Gimp as a graphics tool and the .dds plugin which you can find by goolging and rw-tools with its tutorial on the website to setup, start and eventually finish and create a end result and ofcourse if you know your way around a Gimp or the likes then its even easier and probably alot quicker to. :D
