AFAIK they install the same way as .rwp files.
That button is for older Rail Simulator addons that are in .exe files.
Robert.
That was my understanding Robert and how I have always installed any .rpk files into my Installation, using the same method as with .rpw files and I have never had a problem, but I just thought I'd let Gary have his say.

...very kind of you, but do you really believe you could shut a gobby old Yorkshireman up?
What we could really do with is one of the additions that dubsox has had bother with to suss out (or try to at least) what else he may need to do. If we assume the installation has run as it should (however it's done) that really only leaves an incompatibility with the newer version of the game; that may not be as fatal an issue as it seems (think "wiper pairs" here as an example) and something relatively easy to overcome---over to you dubsox!

gptech wrote:It's certainly true that .exe files from the likes of JT fail because the game no longer has a directory entry in it's own right, it's purely part of Steam as far as Windows is concerned. Furthermore, .exe files are not Kuju Rail Simulator generated files; files produced by the game for distribution/installation are in the .rpk format. The directory structure hasn't changed greatly, the assets themselves are all located relative to the Assets directory but that Assets folder is now in a RailWorks directory as opposed to a RailSimulator one.
dubsox, where did you get .rpk packages from?....I haven't seen one in years and don't have any knocking about to do some experimenting with.
The Chaddock Engineering Signal Box Kit V1 and Bridge Kit V1.

Now you're just being awkward!
Usually, it's older items of rolling stock that cause issues and whilst it's not unknown for scenery items to bring their own wee glitches/foibles they're much rarer. Accordingly we're more or less aware what any issues are liable to be with rolling stock and can all nod our heads sagely and give loads of advice--it's even been known for the collective efforts to actually cure issues!
This one though is gonna be harder to troubleshoot, and much of the work you'll be doing .
The signal boxes are self contained assets, so they aren't reliant on *properly* copying any default files after installation and after installing this one with the Utilities applet (yeas, click the same button as you'd do for a .rwp package) and also by manually extracting the folders from the .rpk with WinRAR and pasting into the game I can't fault it--everything listed as an available asset shows, no graphical corruption or missing textures so just what was/is the issue you've had/are having with these signal boxes? If you can post those details we'll be able to come up with something
Being older assets they're unlikely to be greatly demanding on a PC, but for the sake of completeness could you also post your PC specs and what graphical settings you're using in game?
