Add-ons without scenarios - can they be used anywhere?

Sorry - this is no doubt the n00b of all n00b questions...
Having harked back from the days when using a train on a different route required a Phd in Quantum Physics, I want to revisit this same issue. On Steam, I see a gorgeous-looking Class 150, but no scenarios are mentioned. Am I right in thinking that the new TS2013 interface means I can simply choose any train, then choose any route from right within the game menus (ie no tinkering under the bonnet)? In other words, if I bought the scenario-less Class 150, I could then select, say, Oxford to Paddington line?

For Quick Drive, yes. If you're so inclined, you can take a Union Pacific 'Big Boy' from Ryde to Shanklin on the Isle of Wight (but duck in tunnels).
If you want to use your new train in 'proper' scenarios there is a little bit of tinkering under the bonnet to do this, because if you create a new scenario you have to use something called the 'Object Set Filter' to enable you to choose whatever stock you want. But in 'tinkering under the bonnet' terms, that's much closer to topping up the windscreen washer than changing the oil.

In case of the 150 in particular, you have of course a lot of free scenarios to choose from that are available form this UKTS or similar sites, and in general (and imo) many of these scenarios are better than the scenarios that are delivered 'with the product' so to say.

Thank you Paul and Jos for the replies.
Had to laugh at a Union Pacific on my Isle of Wight route - yeah, I might just do that!!! Would be particularly amusing to trundle it across Ryde Pier (hope it's strong enough). The new scenario option doesn't sound so bad either.
And Jos, DOH! I never even thought about that. I haven't downloaded from here in such a long time. Off to dig around to see what I've missed.
Once again, thanks!

Okay, I'm not having much luck finding any activities for the Class 150 anywhere yet. However, I found a review which states the unit on Steam does actually come with three scenarios. Why on earth don't the publishers state this? I generally won't pay £11.99 for a model with no advertised scenarios, when other models do offer them for the same price. If there are other n00bs like me, not mentioning scenarios might be costing them sales and that's a shame.
Provided I have some scenarios (even if only three) it makes it a worthwhile purchase so that if I make a pig's-ear out of putting this train in other scenarios, I haven't totally wasted my money.

There's a scenario pack for Edinburgh to Glasgow that includes the 150 on Armstrong Powerhouse. Costs a little though.

That's one route I don't have, unfortunately, and it transpires that the three scenarios included with the Class 150 on Steam are also for Edinburgh to Glasgow only. I think I need to start saving some pennies. Had a depressing mooch around JustTrains, and although each pack would work alone, to get full benefit of all the scenarios, each seemed to rely on another pack sold separately. I needed to spend £60 in order to make a £23 purchase in order to get 100% benefit from that purchase.
I guess it pays to keep up, and we pay a LOT more when we fall behind.
I'll quit whining now and drive a train and route I DO own

It pays to wait for a Steam sale!!
