Running Open Rails with Linux

Have you given it a go? Post your experiences, particularly things that worked well. Let the team know what works and doesn't work as they cannot test the software with every combination of routes, activities and content available for MSTS. OpenRails is actively being improved and is quickly approaching v1.0. This is a great place to discuss what you can do with OpenRails.

Running Open Rails with Linux

Post by 42371 »

A topic which will be blindingly obvious to some of you I know but bear with me. When the hard drive on my PC finally died I bought a recon Pc which works well apart from the fact that I could no longer run MSTS as apparently it was incompatible with a newer processor. So I installed OR and MSTS on my slightly newer laptop, no problem as the whole trainsim package is on an external hard drive. Of course, the "new" pc came with Windows 10 too, which I really don't get on with well and a friend who has been in the computer industry for years is not happy with it either.
The laptop is Windows 7 and not wishing to be held to ransom by Microsoft I would prefer to try a Linux OS, will MSTS and OR still work if I make the change.

Well, it seems that I just need to download Linux on to a bootable flash drive so that I can see if MSTS and OR work and I'll let you know.

Since Monogame allegedly runs on Linux, could one use the Monogame version of OR?

I have been thinking about this too now that Win 7 has reached end of support and I don't really want to pay for Win 10 unless I have to.

I am thinking in much the same way, so will be watching this thread too.

Just looked on openrails.org, which states that OR will not run on non Microsoft platforms.....but has Linux been tried ? Well I'm not giving up just yet. If anyone reading this has access to the ELva's Tower forum can you see if there's any info there ?

Hi Andrew,

It is well worth joining Elvas Tower as there is a wealth of information on it including using Linux. A lot of the technical information is beyond me but it appears that OR can be run with Linux and other operating platforms provided everything is properly installed and aligned.

Hope this helps,

Stephen

Thank you Stephen. At the moment I'm writing this via a Live Session with Linux on a flash drive , nowhere near running Open Rails yet, to anyone who hasn't tried Linux yet, everything is very different, but I remain hopeful.
