All previous experimental versions have worked well but Fridays edition is broken.

I have X1836 and it seems to work but I've only used it on a couple of Dorset Coast activities. Did you get it from the Open Rails experimental page? I tend to update these days by downloading the source from the SVN server and recompiling. Perhaps there was an error when they set up the experimental download, that has happened before.
Has anybody else had a problem?

Yes I did get it from the experimental page and this is the first time that an executable binary file version has failed to run for me.

It runs OK for me.

Hi bartdude,
Were you able to start Open Rails? If so, does the log give any clue as to what's wrong?
After I had downloaded X 1836, I couldn't unpack the zip - the hour-glass was permanently displayed! After I'd rebooted, it unpacked OK, so I assume it was caused by something on my PC. To prove it, I re-downloaded and unpacked it without problem.
I have found, however, that in several recent Experimental releases, steam locos won't move! The default Flying Scotsman is OK, but tests with the Dave Robinson's G2 49395 and Pannier 57xx-9600 have been unsuccessful. I haven't reported it as a bug yet because I don't know the cause.
Cheers,
Ged

The steam code is currently being much worked on to try an improve the "physics'. A number of OR only paramaters have/are being added in the mean time trying to retain backwards compatibilty to the standard MSTS eng file. So one will likely to get some strange behaviour until the "dust settles".
For more details refer to elvastower > openrails > developimg features > steam model work in progress thread.

Weirdly EX_1836 is now working ! I previously got an error when attempting to run an activity but today it worked ! I am currently running Windows 8.1 so nothing really surprises me any more,it's software that seems to do what it likes and NOT what you tell it to ! Time and again when I turn functions off they are turned back on on reboot !!
