Graphics Problem In OR

Have you given it a go? Post your experiences, particularly things that worked well. Let the team know what works and doesn't work as they cannot test the software with every combination of routes, activities and content available for MSTS. OpenRails is actively being improved and is quickly approaching v1.0. This is a great place to discuss what you can do with OpenRails.

Hi Peter,

If I am understanding you correctly, these crossed lines appear mainly above trees.

That is because the trees are modelled as two rectangular planes crossing at 90 degrees, and the planes are textured with an image that is transparent where the branches and foliage are not present.

In some cases, Openrails displays these incorrectly, in that a part of the texture that should be at the bottom of the tree is wrapped to the top. That part appears as the thin lines. The only way I've found to correct this is to edit the image file that the tree uses, to add a line of transparency at the bottom of the image. That transparent line then gets tranferred to the top of the image instead, and no lines appear.

It's a bit laborious to do because you have to identify which tree type is causing the problem, then find the relevant .ace file, then convert it to a bitmap, and then edit it. Finally, you need to convert the edited version back to .ace format and replace it in the textures folder.

Otherwise, you have to try an ignore it. Only certain routes are affected I believe.

This is a known problem in MSTS. A correction for it was available, probably several yeas ago (!) but I have searched and cannot find it. Does anyone else remember about this?

I found some posts on Trainsim.com from 15 years ago. At that time, the problem occurred in MSTS if anti-aliasing was switched on. The solution was to edit the ace file, as I described, or turn anti-aliasing off. There is a setting in Openrails to adjust the level of Anti-aliasing. Maybe that will have an effect. It's under Options/Video.

Hi,thanks for the replies the information about the trees was interesting,i also turned off the anti-aliasing but it made little difference so i will just have to ignore the lines for now. Many thanks again for trying to help.Peter.

I was the one that fixed the line/flock of birds over certain trees/bushes in MSTS

This fix ONLY worked for MSTS but never worked for Open rails that I know of

There was no problem with the trees in MSTS. It's OR that causes the lines to appear. There are issues with some other graphics as well for OR that are not a problem with MSTS.

I have corrected all the issues as best I can for MidEast Coast.

Probably the easiest solution for users of MEP in OR would be to get the MEC route on GITHUB and copy the texture and shape folders over to MEP. Make sure you take a back up of the folders and save them somewhere else before you do his in case it doesn't work for some reason.
