diesel train not moving

This sim is a brand new, free game engine built on a Windows XNA foundation. It breathes new life into MSTS content as OpenRails is backwards compatible with MSTS routes, activities, and train sets. It's actively in development and approaching v1.0. Please visit the OpenRails web site for minimum HW specifications and software dependencies. The best way to participate is to ask questions as many members of the OpenRails development team participate in the forums.

AWS not included in the above as I am not sure if it works in OpenRails yet.

Small correction in Hymek is WheelRadius

WheelRadius ( 22.5in )

I am hoping to get some more data later this week that might help with checking these and modelling the locos with Voith transmissions (Class 22, 41, 43 and 52 )

HI again everyone.
Seem to have same problem with all diesel locos.
They accelerate to a certain speed and won't go faster.
Tried a loco at full speed from standstill and it said projected speed 120 but got to 19mph and stayed there
Have now used 10 bit uninstaller to remove everything from HD
Manually removed program files from locations and done fresh installs of msts and open rails
Start from beginning eh!
Thanks

Hi Ged,
You say you have route Paddington To Penzance installed and running ok
I installed from cd 2.5
Running great in msts and open rails except old diesel locos
Can you please explain how you installed it
Thanks

Hi Graham,
Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "Can you please explain how you installed it" as you've said you've got it running OK in MSTS and you've got Open Rails to run the route, but you're having problems getting the diesels to run. That's understandable as most of them date from 2003/2004, which is "before OR"!! There have been some very useful posts in this thread, but I can understand that it can all be a bit daunting, especially to a newcomer!

You may have a problem with the route when running in Open Rails; I have a note in my archive that one of the World files contains an error which causes Open Rails to fail fatally. If this is happening to you, it can be corrected, or I can get a corrected file to you.

Cheers,
Ged

Sorry I thought you said you had old diesels running ok
No, I'm not getting a fatal fail but thanks for offer of corrected file.

Hi Graham

The old diesels can not run in OpenRails. There is no way to "install" them as they are that will make them work.
They have a very strange mix of air and vacuum brake parameters that totally confuses OpenRails - the old computer thing - garbage in garbage out.

I have posted above a DIY eng file for a Class 35 and one for a class 42. I hope the more experienced users will be able to test these and let me know if there are any problems.
(Some have been pointed out.)

I am trying to get more information so that I can make reasonable OR eng files for classes 22, 41, 43 and 52.

I will post my attempts here when they are ready.

If you can wait a couple of weeks I may be able to make a patch for the GWR CD that will get all the diesels moving. Then you can download and install and enjoy in OpenRails - but it will take time and all I can suggest for now is please be patient, if that is the solution you want.

Hi Graham
Sorry to hear that you are still having problems with your diesel stock from GWR route in Open Rails. As has been previously referred to in this thread some stock written for MSTS contains data that will be accepted and will work ok in MSTS but will not work in OR. The diesels that you refer to fall into this category.
Anyway, to work. I am making the assumption that you have a text editor installed on your computer and that you are comfortable editing .eng and .wag files with it. If not, please let us know via the forum and I am sure someone will be able to point in the direction you need to go in order to to get an editor and how to edit .eng and .wag files.
With regard to the Hymeks on this disc they all have the same problems for running in OR. You will need to make the following changes in the .eng file for each of your locos D7001_CB to D7029_CB.
Start with D7013_CB. From your Trainset folder copy and paste the file D7013_CB into a temporary location of your choice.
Copy from the GWR route cd the file D7013_CB and put it in your trainset folder and allow it to overwrite the file already there. This will give you a fresh start with an unedited file.
Now within the folder D7013_CB in your trainset folder create a new folder. Name it Openrails and copy and paste the .eng file named D7013_CB into it. This file in the Openrails folder is the one you will be editing as follows
Open the Openrails folder and open the .eng file with your text editor. Change the following lines in the .eng file
BrakeEquipmentType( "Triple_valve, Auxilary_reservoir, Emergency_brake_reservoir" ) to this
BrakeEquipmentType( "Vacuum_Brake, Auxilary_reservoir, Emergency_brake_reservoir" )
BrakeCylinderPressureForMaxBrakeBrakeForce( 70 ) to this
BrakeCylinderPressureForMaxBrakeBrakeForce( 21 )

MaxForce ( 988kN #56,500lbf = 247kN x 4 ) to this
MaxForce ( 217kN )

EngineBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 90 ) to this
EngineBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 21 )
TrainBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 90 ) to this
TrainBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 21 )

Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.04 0

Notch( 0.85 0 TrainBrakesControllerSuppressionStart )
Notch( 0.9 0 TrainBrakesControllerContinuousServiceStart )

)

To this

Notch( 0.50 0 TrainBrakesControllerHoldStart )
Notch( 0.75 0 TrainBrakesControllerApplyStart )
Notch( 1.0 0 TrainBrakesControllerEmergencyStart )
)
)
Repeat for each loco.
These are the minimum changes required to make these locos run in OR.
Take care when editing that all brackets are in the correct place. I will post the changes to the “Western” .eng files in another post.
AND THAT’S IT!!!
Fingers crossed, All the best

Hi Again Graham
Following on from my previous post here are the .eng file changes required for D1000 to D1062.
Open the Openrails folder and open the .eng file with your text editor. Change the following lines in the .eng file
BrakeEquipmentType( "Triple_valve, Auxilary_reservoir, Emergency_brake_reservoir" ) to this
BrakeEquipmentType( "Vacuum_Brake, Auxilary_reservoir, Emergency_brake_reservoir" )

EngineBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 90 ) to this
EngineBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 21 )
TrainBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 90 ) to this
TrainBrakesControllerMaxSystemPressure( 21 )

Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.0125 0
NumNotches ( 1
Notch ( 0 1 Dummy )
)
)
to this
Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.01 0.25
NumNotches ( 5
Notch( 0.0 0 EngineBrakesControllerReleaseStart )
Notch( 0.25 0 EngineBrakesControllerRunningStart )
Notch( 0.50 0 EngineBrakesControllerHoldStart )
Notch( 0.75 0 EngineBrakesControllerApplyStart )
Notch( 1.0 0 EngineBrakesControllerEmergencyStart )
)
)
Brake_Train ( 0 1 0.0125 0.75
NumNotches ( 5
Notch ( 0 0 TrainBrakesControllerReleaseStart )
Notch ( 0.3 1 TrainBrakesControllerGraduatedSelfLapLimitedStart )
Notch ( 0.85 0 TrainBrakesControllerSuppressionStart )
Notch ( 0.9 0 TrainBrakesControllerContinuousServiceStart )
Notch ( 0.95 0 TrainBrakesControllerEmergencyStart )
)
)
to this
Brake_Train ( 0 1 0.01 0.25
NumNotches ( 5
Notch( 0.0 0 TrainBrakesControllerReleaseStart )
Notch( 0.25 0 TrainBrakesControllerRunningStart )
Notch( 0.50 0 TrainBrakesControllerHoldStart )
Notch( 0.75 0 TrainBrakesControllerApplyStart )

That’s It
Again these are the minimum changes required.
Cheers

Hi Graham
I have just checked the "Warships" D805 to D862.
they only need the Brake Controllers changing as follows

Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.0125 0
NumNotches ( 1
Notch( 0 1 Dummy )
)
)
to
Brake_Engine ( 0 1 0.01 0.25
NumNotches ( 5
Notch( 0.0 0 EngineBrakesControllerReleaseStart )
Notch( 0.25 0 EngineBrakesControllerRunningStart )
Notch( 0.50 0 EngineBrakesControllerHoldStart )
Notch( 0.75 0 EngineBrakesControllerApplyStart )
Notch( 1.0 0 EngineBrakesControllerEmergencyStart )
)
)

(Brake_Train ( 0 1 0.025 0.75
NumNotches ( 5
Notch( 0 0 TrainBrakesControllerReleaseStart )
Notch( 0.3 1 TrainBrakesControllerGraduatedSelfLapLimitedHoldingStart )
Notch( 0.85 0 TrainBrakesControllerSuppressionStart )
Notch( 0.9 0 TrainBrakesControllerContinuousServiceStart )
Notch( 0.95 0 TrainBrakesControllerEmergencyStart )
)
)
to
Brake_Train ( 0 1 0.01 0.25
NumNotches ( 5
Notch( 0.0 0 TrainBrakesControllerReleaseStart )
Notch( 0.25 0 TrainBrakesControllerRunningStart )
Notch( 0.50 0 TrainBrakesControllerHoldStart )
Notch( 0.75 0 TrainBrakesControllerApplyStart )
Notch( 1.0 0 TrainBrakesControllerEmergencyStart )
)
)

Cheers
