I'm getting close to finishing my Talyllyn Route for RailWorks and started to go through some scenario ideas, looking at night time one to check what additional textures I need for my scenery items.
Setting a scenario up for about 22:00, I was very diappointed to find that the night time was apparently bright enough to read a book by !! I found that no matter what weather pattern or time was set, the surronding landscape & scenery looked as though it was permanently lit by a full moon with shadows being unnaturally black.
Is this a standard in RW that other people have found? If so I'm a bit disappointed that even the default routes lack a natural look to them at night.
I know night running does not suit everyone but it is good to see the window lights, lamps etc illuminated en route as a change of scene.

Re: Night Time Scenarios
Steve,
There have been several discussions here about the light nights in RailWorks and RailSimulator and in at least one of the threads someone has posted some settings for the time of day blueprint to make night realistically dark. Can't remember off hand which part of the forum it's in but a search should find it.

Re: Night Time Scenarios
I just turn down the brightness in game to about 10 or 12 prior to running a night scenario it is naff, I agree. The large stations in default routes are dissapointing also, as they are unlit, you would expect these to be a glowing hive of activity at night

Re: Night Time Scenarios
Andy - thanks for the reply. Found the thread in the RS forum.
One further question, will I need a seperate Time of Day blueprint for my own route. I'm assuming that there is one such file per route and amending it woun't affect other routes that someone has installed.
Haven't looked at these blueprints at all so my questions may be totally irrelevent.

Re: Night Time Scenarios
I've never had a problem with night time at all
Day time

Nightime w/ "Clear" sky

Night time w/ "overcast" sky

No brightness adjustments made at all, time set to 22:00

Re: Night Time Scenarios
hi
in railsimulator i made a new "TimeOfDay" blueprint for my route, the map was totally dark. but again, it would make no sense
to darken the map actually, why? again the same answer, because you wouldn't see anything on that map without realistic lights.
you wouldn't see the locos, the tracks, buildings, hills, tunnels etc. then you would loose the orientation completely.
believe me, i tested it.

Re: Night Time Scenarios
Styckx - I think your screens are from the IoW add-on? If so RDSL used a different TimeofDay blueprint and I agree that looks better than the default.
RailX - I'm not suggesting that night-time should be black!! It just needs to be darkened, I think on the under-lit parameter & terrain parameter, so that it doesn't all look like a full moon night even when it's full cloud cover. Some of the screens in the referred to thread show it can be done to give a reasonable effect.

Re: Night Time Scenarios
Yes you're right but there is a very simple solution. You may use RW's editor to change weather, but in this case I use RW_Tools since you will have a few different "overcast" weather selections in the scenario editor, using RW_Tools you know you're choosing the right one the first time. Whatever pleases youspontin wrote:Styckx - I think your screens are from the IoW add-on? If so RDSL used a different TimeofDay blueprint and I agree that looks better than the default.
Tick the Island Line assets in the developer menu in the editor. Close RW's.
Open up RW_Tools, edit whatever scenario you want to be night time. Change the time, to an obvious night time setting, click "set weather" now browse over to weather folder in the Island Line folder under RSDL in the asset folder, and select "overcast" (or whatever weather you want).
Save, and enjoy your much better nighttime. Again, you can still choose this weather in the scenario editor but might have to try a few till you find the Island line weather as they will be named similarly
Day time: New Castle To York

Night time w/ default Weather1

Night time using the Island Line "overcast" weather.
