smarty2 wrote:Be nice if we had a response from RS.com, but i doubt it because if they say no then that is going to squash any hope of any better realism for this sim. Don't get me wrong i like RW's and it is better than RS but if a freeware sim can achieve so much then why not a program that is technically newer? Just my opinion
And costs £35 !! :o
BVE has come on in leaps and bounds since it first started and is promising to overtake the "technically superior?" RW.
Don't forget this is only the first beta OpenBVE route but there'll be more. It's looking vastly superior to the old cardboard cut-out trains and dodgy graphics of the old Japanese BVE.
Someone commented that the scenery and tracks in BVE are just eye candy, so what is RW? It's all eye candy and not much realism. And negative comments like "I'm not bothered about cab tilt" is probably why people at RS.com don't "bother" to improve on things like cab tilt, external lighting etc.

hi

fantastic video!

i like the raindrops on the windows. the ambient light looks very realistic. it would be very interesting to know how they create
they're shadows, maybe shadow maps? they look smooth. but the lighting effects are poor ,like in railworks.
when you drive into a tunnel then the light must lightup the assets/tunnelwall too.

but it seems that they still have more graphical features in they're simulator than in railworks.

good job!

But in openbve or any bve you cannot shunt or change directions, as someone else said. So if you want raindrops rather than ability to choose you're direction, that's fine by me.

Well, you've listed three, but I'd have to say BVE would not be on my list of the three 'biggest'

Mindblowing for you maybe, rather expected and 'old-hat' for some of us ;)

Not to mention that RailWorks graphics engine struggles to keep up with the speed of the train. Take a train up to triple digit speeds and watch the scenery loading cripple the sim and my experience is with a machine using an i7 975 at 4GHz/6 GB of RAM and the latest from Nvidia and ATI.

Take openBVE’s OpenGL based graphics engine up to triple digit speeds and not a stutter to be found and a sense of speed not found in any of the other consumer so-called train sims.

OK folks, just a friendly word - can we please stop using BVE as a stick to beat RW with (however unintentional this may be in some cases). They are two very different sims, with completely different features, pros and cons, so in the main, comparisons are rather meaningless....

If the thread turns into yet another "my sim's better than your sim" romp, it will be locked.

If I didnt know any better I would say that 3.50 in that video is real life. That beats anything Rw has to offer.

Dean, what part of the previous moderator post wasn't clear?

I feel it is extremely relevant, very topical and ultimately incredibly useful to compare products that are available.
By comparing the best and worst points of all the sims available then it's a form of free market research for the developers to try and create the ultimate sim of the future. I belive 'continuous improvement' is the buzzword here.

Can you just imagine the graphics of RW but with the movement and sound of BVE and with the content of MSTS??

That's what I am looking for the future to bring and I believe the thread title "RS.Com is this what we want" makes this discussion extremely interesting and valuable.

Hi
IMHO in comes down to atmosphere,i would like to pull in to Paddington station and on leaving the cab your into a busy noisy capital city terminus, at the moment apart from the odd cough and sneeze it is silent, stations are noisy places, with anouncements, chatter, shouting, whistles, doors banging, this is what i mean by atmosphere, somebody mentioned lighting, stations at night are magical places,as is the surounding areas, atmospheric lighting and sound would give RW that wow factor, forget about online play and chat gimmicks, try your hardest to simulate the sights and sounds of the real railway and your on to a winner.
when i purchased the GWR hall recently,i was so dissapointed with the sound i hardly used it,since the sound upgrades its all i drive at the moment the difference is astounding, imagine if the sounds of RW were given the same treatment.

I thought it was the thread starter's intention to compare the pros and cons of BVE and RW? Or am I being thick again?

There are two modes of discussion to distinguish.

1) Should RW be improved in fields where BVE excels (or should they fix operational side first, and what is the operational side for each of us)?

2) Is RW or BVE the better game/product/simulation?

Mode 2 is totally pointless because each product has a different market niche, and gives the moderators some headache because a flame war is always around the corner.

Mode 1 holds a lot of conflict potential, too, but it also has some potential for some insight. E.g., I find it interesting to see cab sway listed with physics. Also the post about acoustic station atmosphere shows that the default content has a lot of room for improvements without touching the functionality of the game core at all. Just like the moving vegetation.

Therefore, while there is a distinct flavour of "Wishlist for Mk.4", elaborating on the points raised in mode 1 can provide some good, while mode 2 only provides bad. At least this is my interpretation of the situation and the statements above.

My intention was not to start a comparison war, but a question as my subject title indicates, a lot of the features of OBVE are the things i would like to see in RW's but without the drawbacks that are inherent with OBVE, i also believe that the discussions here have been insightful and are being a good platform to gauge what people expect from RW's in the future? The ball i believe is being bounced all the time into RS.com's court.

Well said and I feel exactly the same. Utimately I firmly believe that RS.com are striving to create the sim to cater for the majority of users.

MODS: hopefully no one will hijack the thread into a slanging match between packages but I feel the comparisons are useful to illustrate what people would like to see RW become.

They deleted my thread without reason.
Why ? Maybe scared for the truth. Rs will get competition from the follow up of msts-1.

So its now or never for RS to act like an adult.
