Re: Animated Level Crossings???
Hi AndiS, thanks again to you and Karma99, fantastic breakthrough. Is it hard for an amatuer such as myself to install these crossings into a route? Or is the script primarily aimed at route builders? Also can we now look forward to revised versions of existing routes which incorporate your crossing scripts?
Regards
Dave

Hi Dave
Installing the crossings into a route is very easy, and I've included a full document with pictures to explain where to place the links they need and the basics of why you're putting them there.
Modelling your own gates and using the script is trickier but the instructions from Andi should be plain enough if you've created animated scenery in RS/RW already.

Re: Animated Level Crossings???
Dave, regarding easy, look at Pete's pictures. Of course, you can do something wrong, like placing the links in a wrong place. But once you tried it out with success, the next one will appear natural to you.
Regarding routes, I guess the first thing would be to get a bit more variety. The ones that are there would not look too plausible on a modern route, I guess. But I'm not an expert on UK routes. And, like always, you need the original route builder in the boat or updates will overwrite your changes.

He he... even though someone placed a rather crude, but workable British-style crossing on the download area, it's good, but the traffic is still mis-behaving. Hope that will prompt someone at RailWorks palace to work on how to get the traffic to stop for things like that. Then it would be near-perfect once someone designs a wider, and more realistic-looking crossing, and hopefully with flashing lights, bells and raising booms. Heaven on Earth, or near enough to it, then I guess !longbow wrote:..the reason being that currently road traffic won't stop when the crossing closes.

It was built from photographs and dimensions of real crossings.. how much more "realistic" do you want it?ka959 wrote:once someone designs a wider, and more realistic-looking crossing
Re: Animated Level Crossings???
But it did seem a little narrow, somehow... maybe built for Austin A-7's, perhaps ?karma99 wrote:It was built from photographs and dimensions of real crossings.. how much more "realistic" do you want it?ka959 wrote:once someone designs a wider, and more realistic-looking crossing

Re: Animated Level Crossings???
It sure does add to the realism, I agree, but how about a large concrete block added to ensure the road traffic does stop short of the track ?growler37 wrote:Hi

Can't someone create an object that decreases speed when a car passes over it, that's a road linked object. (Like the track linked object that reduces the voltage/power output on electric trains.)ka959 wrote:Hope that will prompt someone at RailWorks palace to work on how to get the traffic to stop for things like that.

Re: Animated Level Crossings???
But where's the animated crossing gate keeper pushing the gates open and closed? (chorkle chorkle). I'm afraid there will always be users who are never satisfied. Good work from Pete and Andi. Although this isn't something I've personnally been crying for, it's a good example of the potential RW has for enhancements, all it needs is people to employ their minds (and hands!). Alternately people can just carry on grumbling on the forums ("I want more, and better!") and hope someone else will do it for them.karma99 wrote:It was built from photographs and dimensions of real crossings.. how much more "realistic" do you want it?ka959 wrote:once someone designs a wider, and more realistic-looking crossing

Roads don't work like tracks internally. You cannot have signals for them.Trainguy76 wrote:Can't someone create an object that decreases speed when a car passes over it, that's a road linked object. (Like the track linked object that reduces the voltage/power output on electric trains.)
You could define tracks looking like roads. Then you could have stopping cars. But they would not take over each other and you would have to define each car as an AI train, and add lots of invisible block signals to keep them from crashing. It could produce nice queing effects, but otherwise it would be too tiresome for route builders, and look odd in a new way.
Regarding realism, I guess the only realism for many people is what is in front of their nose, because that is their horizon.
Actually, like someone else pointed out, for many eras and countries, it was totally illegal to put anything like a gate across the tracks of a running line, but they did do it in the old times in UK and that is what was modelled.

Re: Animated Level Crossings???
Hi guys, these are great, The coders hope to have fully functioning crossing soon, it's just behind a few other more pressing matters. However, I have seen some very good progress on our test machines.
