Re: Project Platform
Hi
After a very busy January I am able to get back to this project and I have made a start on some Beach Huts.
Despite now having made over 250 items in 3D Canvas, I still only know the basics about how to use it but when I can afford the time to experiment, I usually pick up something new. I have been trying out the ambient and diffuse light settings which are not very helpful when viewing in 3DC but really show up only when exported and viewed in RW.
These three huts are the the same model but with different light settings and this clearly shows the way in which the shadows are brought out as the settings are lowered. I think I am going to go for the middle setting which seems about right, and will use this on the rest of the huts of which there will be about 7 variations.

I am always open to any tips that people can give me on using 3DC.

Re: Project Platform
Hi All
Just making models that are associated with the summer highlights how cold and wintry it is at the moment. Roll on the summer and those great days laying on the beach at the Phorum Peninsular and the occasional breaks to brew up some tea in the beach hut and make some salmon and cucumber sandwiches for lunch.
The Phorum Peninsular Borough Council are quite adventurous with the colour schemes of their beach huts but even they were a bit surprised when they saw some of the repaints for the summer of 2010. Perhaps a little toning down of the colours and a little weathering is what is needed before the season really gets going.

Re: Project Platform
Try muting the colours a bit....add a layer of grey, per transparency layer over the top.
It's a bit in-yer-eye, atm. It's a nice detail, though.
Cheers Bazza

Hi
I have toned down and weathered one of the huts but although it probably looks more realistic, it is a bit too miserable. A compromise is required.

Re: Project Platform
Looks good, Geoff. One thing I've found with railworks, is that the more I make for it, the more I feel the need to desaturate the texture colours to get a more realistic effect.
A small update from me on the stuff I'm doing. Corris 3 loco, 3 NG coaches and 2 NG wagons (plus NG track) has been submitted to RSDL.
Have done a bit more work on the gunpowder van I posted about earlier on.

Have added some 3D modelling to the wagon sides (the previous model had none). Also added a bit of bump mapping to try and increase the look of decreptitude (if there is such a word!)
Cheers,
Kevin

Re: Project Platform
Once I have the ProjectPlatform work out of the way (and also some Talyllyn stuff) I'll have to take a look at improving the track texturing.Neptune50006 wrote:It's all looking very good. Well done to everyone involved.
I especially like the new narrow gauge track textures. They'd look great on the L&B

Re: Project Platform
I think the trees in that shot are from core.
I don't plan on making any trees for this route.

Those wagons are just fantastic. You have skills that I can only dream of
There are so many aspects to 3D Modelling that it does take a long time to work out how they all work together, but a real inspiration to keep me going is that (I think) you are producing your models in 3D Canvas which proves that this relatively inexpensive program is actually capable of creating some very professional work in the right hands.

Re: Project Platform
i would extrude (cut out) the door and the window part by -0,10 or -0,12 as this huts haven't many polys. second i would use a colored wood texture like this with some shading:
This is the original

and this is created in about 10 mins.

and third i would use only the TrainLightMapWithDiffuse.fx shader with a 64 x 64 pix Bitmap of grey to darken the model instead of change ambient settings.
read you...

Re: Project Platform
Hi Michael
Thanks for the tips. My original design for the huts was based on some new GRP ones at Seaford so there was no wood involved, but I have already changed the design to include double doors at the front which looks better with some 3D effects for the doors and handle.
I think there is still time to have a go at a more traditional wooden hut as well, perhaps with a porch, and make use of the plank type of effects you show. I am much better at using my own photos or textures from libraries but creating artwork from scratch is a bit difficult for me.
