Reskinning in photoshop

Post by ChrisBarnes »

Hi all!

I've been reading JiveBunny's very useful reskinning tutorial. Everything was going successfully, until i hit the photoshoping (*dread* :( ) part. I'm fine at the actual painting, it's just when i come to save the damn thing, I get the dreaded 'the image size must be a multiple of 4'. If I change the image size to 1024 by 256 pixels as the railsim document suggests, it WILL save, but the .dds file will not be imported into RS Bin Tools, because 'the height has changed'. Sigh.
You'll have probably figured that i am a user of Rail Simulator (if that info helps  ). Could someone please do a step-by-step guide on how to successfully save and import an edited texture in photoshop CS3. You guys are my only hope! :D

Regards, Chris

Can you not use the Photoshop plug-in that creates Ace files directly?

Yeah i used the nvidea plugin, and set it to how Jivebunny showed in the tutorial. Then when i hit save, it gave my the 'multiple of 4' message.

If you're simply reskinning why are you resizing the texture?

Because it wouldn't save the image if it was the original size. It's stupid really  .

Whew! Finally managed to save my reskin and it will be imported into Rs Bin Tools. Now i've met a new obstacle. When I replace the original skin i get a message saying, 'Access to RailSimulator/Assets/CJBarnes/Addon/RailVehicles/Steam/The Lancashire Fusilier/Tender/Textures/black5_tender_1_ds.TgPcDx is denied. This is a read only file.

Well, I hope a quoted correctly :D . Does anyone know how i may be granted access? ps. You'll have probably have figured that i'm reskining the default black5 into preserved Lancashire Fusiler. If I ever get this working i'll upload; railworks users could possibly reupload a rw version to take advantage of rw features!

I might be wrong but I don't think you can do this with the black 5 ? Maybe someone else knows better though.

Dont see why i shouldn't be able to; there are other reskins of the default black5 in the rs download archive. Perhaps Trainmad or Sly or JunkHeap could help me here?

Hi, the file is read only which means it can't be modified. Find the file with explorer - right click the file - choose properties - then untick the read only box & you will be able to edit it, - or use rwtools to make the whole directory read/write, then you shouldn't get any more of these errors :D

You need to go to a photo hosting site such as http://imageshack.us/

You need to browse to locate your image on your system, then upload to the site. When it has, look for the website links to your image. Copy and paste the link into your forum post. Job done. Take a look at forum rules regarding maximum photo sizes or the mods will send round the hit squad! :o

Hope this helps.
