Update Problems, Roll-Back?

Post by tonic110 »

Whilst RS.com are having what looks to be major probs with their latest update, could they not contact Steam and ask them to do a roll-back IF that is possible, while they fix the problem?

In all my years of Steam usage I've never seen a patch 'rolled back'. If something dire happens with the updated patch I've seen companies release a fix within 12hrs (Valve) and most within 48hrs. Rockstar had problems with a GTAIV update on Steam and IIRC took around a week to be sorted out...

So really unless it's a Valve produced game (whom own Steam), the relative timescale for fixes is up to the developer and you'll soon find out which developer has invested time in proper Beta testing before rolling a patch out, and the ones whom are very slow to fix issues introduced in shoddy patches can lose business in the future as people won't buy their stuff again.

It was only a thought really (not knowing if it was possible or not)
It would have kept people happy, the community developers could have carried on doing their thing, whilst RS did theirs.

Why doesn't steam notify us when an update is available and give us the option to download when we choose? That way we can make any backups we think necessary (knowing RW- probably a back up of the entire RW folder is desirable!) or choose to download it at a later date when the update seems safe to download.

Currently we have a venomous bug in the latest update which can seriously damage anyone's installation. but alongside that we continue to have a traffic fiasco. Stage one gave us cars which acted more like aircraft failing at take off and I had a cavalcade of boats in both directions which were 'coupled' more closely than railway carriages. Now I have an occasional vehicle passing by as the traffic pattern resembles that circa 1907. This is no doubt a direct consequence of traffic crossing a road join more easily. The density of traffic in RS/RW has always been inversely proportional to the length of road traversed (road successfully connected so traffic crosses its joins).

I know you can run RW in offline mode but that's a laborious process switching to and fro. The various options should be part of the steam software. as they are with windows updates, where you can choose 1) updates to be automatic, 2) for them to be downloaded but not installed without permission, or 3) to be declined.

Every time steam gets to work on my installation it restores key 'T' as the one which modifies the terrain, whereas I keep changing it to shift-T making the chances of inadvertently damaging several tiles of terrain minimal (for which undo has no effect- if the CAPS lock key is pressed your are still safe with Shift_T).

I set Steam to always run in offline mode and only update when I chose. That way, I can see any problems that are flagged up on this forum before Steam is allowed to do any updating.

I too run in offline mode but in this case I was foolish enough to be an "early adopter" of the update without taking a backup thinking that they couldn't be incompetent enough to release two flawed updates in a row.

The roll back suggestion has been made before in these forums, by me for one, but RS.com haven't responded. It would appear that they now only use these forums to communicate matters which suit their agenda, I hope they are paying for Premium Access to get their "air time"!

I think that most people know by now that I am not a keen supporter of the Steam system but if we must have it, then it needs to be controlled by us and not the other way round.

FYI I am a premium member,
I have also uploaded free assets here and I will be also be including my rollingstock from personal projects into the core sim.
I know I more than pay for my air time.

The code will not be rolled back but a fix rolled out once beta have tested it.

regards

Derek
