Re: About to smash my computer up

Post by petermakosch »

Sorry to bump an old thread but I have some fustrations I want to get out.

So, the scenario editor, the past 60 minutes of my life have been wasted trying to make it work.

Clicking
Sometimes when I click, it doesn't click, sometimes pressing 9 to get the 2D map doesn't work - my keyboard has taken a bit of the force :/

Route Markers
That's a nice feature. But sort of worthless at the moment. When I click on a route marker, I want to be taken there, but instead it does nothing - WOO, something that does nothing - how useful! ha ha.

2D Map
Very good feature, but again with a little tweaking, it could be actually useful. That is to say at the moment, if it wasn't even there at all, I wouldn't miss it. When viewing normally, I am at Darlington. I want to get to Newcastle pretty quick, I know, I will use the 2D map. 5 seconds later and I am looking at the 2D version of Newcastle. I want to check something, so I right-click and now look, back at Darlington again. What a waste. Why can't the 2D map and usual view be of the same view? Or at least an option?

Scenario Deletion
I would find it very easy to mess up something the way RailWorks makes you delete scenarios. You have to actually go into the World Editor and delete the stupid little square (that always looks like it is pulling a face at you). Why not on the Scenario Selection screen (Edit, Continue, Play), have a button for Delete? So much easier, that (as an end user) is where I would expect something like that to be.

No offence at the creators, but seriously, sometimes I wonder why they have made it like they have. I know I will get used to it, but it is possibly one of the most fustraiting things to be told in the manual that "tick this box to make your train the player train" when the check box is actually greyed out.

I know one day I will look back at this and laugh but while I have literally a month of free time, I am eagar to learn as much as I can and spend most days trying it out.

I would suggest that you start by reading this:
http://www.railsimdownloads.com/wiki/tiki-index.php

and watch these video's (although for RS most applies to RW):
http://www.blip.tv/search?q=Rail+Simulator

You will find that a lot of what you have said above is incorrect, but you need to 'learn' how to operate RW first (and find things on your keyboard - like the 'Delete' key - http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... &sk=t&sd=a).

The Wiki is great yes, but not exactly user/new person/basic friendly.
Mostly text with very few pictures has always been a struggle as it's all well and good naming features and markers but until I know what it looks like, then again, useless :P
Yes, when I am used to RailWorks it will prove to be helpful. The Manual from their website is a bit more helpful, but seriously, when the "Player Train" option is greyed out, no amount of clicking or deleting will make it "incorrect". Therefore no, what I said wasn't exactly incorrect

However are you seriously telling me that when in the 2D map at Station B, I can switch back to the usual view and be at Station B? If so, why is it not as simple as right-clicking and i am there? That's what I don't get, why make it complicated? Perhaps it is something I have just become the past few years - as an end user, I only expect the best from software and programs. Usually, I get an acceptable level of service, even when things are new.

Having to enter the World Editor to delete a scenario is more complicated than it could be with a simple button on the selection screen (or even build it into the packer!). What happens if I accidently delete something else, don't realise, then delete the actual scenario, save the route and find out later it's fudged?

Another great example us the use of the ESC key - why not make this bring up the "Do you want to exit" dialog menu instead of forcing us to use the mouse? :P Ha ha, the list goes on :D

Peter.

You do not have to go into the world editor to delete a scenario. It is as simple as highlighting the scenario in the list and pressing "delete". I think that is what emrhd01 was getting at.

I am not sure what problem you have with the shortcuts we have? What is difficult about using "ctrl & left click" on the 2d map to take you to your destination? Why would you want to just press escape to go to the main menu, wouldn't that mean no save and the loss of work if pressed by accident?

When you click a location marker on the fly-out menu, follow it up by clicking on the "Play" button on the top compass fly out menu...this will take you to that Marker.
Crtl-Q brings up the in game exit menu rather than the ESC key.

Also, have you considered RW Tools? You can delete scenarios to your heart's content without even starting Railworks,

On the list of scenarios for a route, highlight the scenario and press the delete button on your keyboard. Select Yes or No when asked "Are you sure?".
Done.

You should only find this in Free Roam, this because ALL loco's can be driven in Free Roam and are classed as player Loco's.

Whist in Edit Mode, If you want to move to different location (other than the actual start location)

1. Go to the 2D map, Key '9'.

2. CTRL-click on the location you want to go to.

3. Go back into the 3D world.

4. On the 'location' top flyout, click on the 'triangle/arrow' just below the world symbol.

The location will immediately reload at the place you ctrl-clicked on the map.

You don't go into World Editor to 'Delete' a Scenario, just load RW and select the Route you want to delete the Scenario on click on it (it wil turn red) and press the Del key on your keyboard.

EDIT: Thanks Guys (above), it took me longer to type my reply than you.

Ha ha, I will have to write them down and give them a go.
I know this is nothing more than first look fustrations - IE, first time using a program and it's not working EXACTLY how I want it to.

I know I come across a bit absurd sometimes, but it's just because I feel like I am getting no where and I can't stand wasting time :)
Please don't be offended by anything I write, unless I write that you should be offended, which has never happened in the last 7 years :P

keep firing away with the queries Peter. We we're all beginners at this at some point.
