Stencil Shadows are indeed a pain, I wish something could be done in the foreseable future... I hate making shadow models, I hate the way they look, I hate the way they change as you zoom in or out, and I absolutely hate the way tree shadows floats on plain surfaces because ground doesn't cast shadows beneath them... Did i mention I hated them ?
This engine would really shine with better lightning and simple shadow maps, it would give the game a more modern look and would allow us, creators, to concentrate on more important things than shadows. Turning the shadows off is definitely not an option as shadows are the key to visuel realism.
I have been preaching for better shadows since day one, so my expectations are kind of low ... Please don't follow the trainz path and its very distinctive look that hasn't changed for years... As a content creator, i would be very motivated if RW was to evolve on this matter...
today i grab out some old treads, sorry moderators
the problem with stencil shadows is that they look so primitive. the best example for that are the shadows on the hq trees in RW.
the second problem is that they don't look smooth enough, they look so strong on the edges. this is not realistic enough for a game like RW.
you know, the same applies to the light effecs in RW. thats why some people are not motivated to post more screenshots from night maps.
