RailWorks in 3D

Did you know that the new Nvidia drivers support 3D for RailWorks? You just need 3D anaglyph glasses (red/cyan) and calibrate the 3D settings in the Nvidia Control Panel and when you're in the game press Ctrl + T. Here are some screenshots. Unfortunately I failed to capture video. Enjoy!

For that, you need a more expensive solution, with a set of fancy glasses. This gives you basic 3D with the coloured lenses, although it doesn't work for everybody. As it has to render each from twice, you will also get lower frame rates, so you need a fairly powerful system to make it work well.

I tried Rail Simulator with the Nvidia 3D Vision (the solution with the wireless LCD glasses and 3D LCD monitor) and it worked really well, although it can strain your eyes a bit.
The the main problem was that the labels that would pop up when you pass through a station would sort of remain in 2D, and had the effect of making you go crosseyed.
I couldn't find an option in the graphics setting to disable the labels (I didn't look very hard, so maybe it is there, but I couldn't find it).

I never bought Railworks, but I suspect it works just as well.

Which driver version are you using?
I tried to get it working a few weeks ago but it looks like they may have dropped the free anaglyph support in favour of their paying product.

Google them. You can pick up a pair for as little as US$1.00. I have a pair for years now and after looking at these screenshots, it's looks great, but the colour is messed up. Really need polarised 3D for the best results. Still, quite cool.

IF you tune in to Chris Evans' program yesterday. They were talking about then on there. TV's now being supplied with 3d. There will eventually be some pretty heavily priced glasses (sort of designer in style). So you wont have to use those ones from the early 1980's technology has moved on a bit.

But i would never use a game in 3d.

Just a thought, but Dataman said of this 'it can strain your eyes a bit' and these glasses seem to be very cheap. I would worry about the effects on my vision. My eyesight is poor enough without exposing it to any additional risk, so interesting but it wouldn't be for me. I wonder whether there's any medical evidence on the safety of these glasses if used regularly?

The old blue red glasses, I wouldn't want to be wearing those for a long period of time. That's what you need to see the effects above. However, the newer polarised ones which don't use colour tints, the ones use at Disney, Universal and in the cinemas today, wouldn't see any problm wearing those for long periods.

I'll review my experience in more detail:

The product I am talking about is the NVidia 3D Vision with the proper LCD glasses, not the cheap glasses. This technology is superior to previous 3D products and requires a good Nvidia graphics card (e.g. GeForce 8800 or above) since everything runs at twice the speed to get the required minimum Frame rate of 60. Also, a special 3D LCD monitor is required (e.g. Samsung 2233RZ), that differs from ordinary monitors in that it has a refresh rate of 120Hz, instead of 60Hz.

Included in the product is a controller with a knob that allows you to adjust the depth of field. When this is turned up high, the 3D effect is enhanced, however I found this can cause eye strain. If it is set to a reasonable value, then you won't get any eye strain.

The first day I tried it, I felt a bit dizzy afterwards, but after the second day, I felt Ok. Again, probably because I had some of the settings up too high. Generally, I consider it a really good product and don't regret the purchase. The Steam locos come across really well, as they have many more things sticking out at you (e.g. piston rods, smoke, levers/dials in the cab etc).

I bought it on impulse :), and didn't read the requirements properly (Vista only). Since I was using XP and didn't want to upgrade, I threw together a temporary test machine and tried it on that. Since then it has been sitting on the shelf awaiting the time I permanently upgrade to Vista in a couple of weeks.

I am told it also works really well on MSTS1, but I couldn't get this installed on Vista.

Back in the day I used to use the early 3D Stereo glasses (the LCD shutter ones) that came with various 3D Cards and/or you could also buy a product that would do it quite well too with some nice glasses (I forget the name now).

I always found the effect to be fantastic, I recall using one of the Albula line routes on it and getting serious vertigo looking down in to a steep valley, it was really impressive :) I recall I also took it all to at least one or two exhibitions too and everyone was quite shocked at how good it looked.

I quite like the idea of the new generation of 3D but i'm going to see how it progresses and watch the price come down a bit first - £400 for a monitor is a bit costly in my opinion, no matter how good the refresh rate might be :)

I also agree that if set up correctly you shouldn't get any eye strain.

Matt.
