RW Package Manager

Post by Valenta17 »

Ok, the RW Package Manager is starting to get on my nerves. Obviously you can't double click on the RPK/RWP file anymore to install it, meaning I have to run the game and search out for the file, THEN install it. Even after that, when I want to install anything else with the RW Package Manager, it always brings me to my desktop? So everytime I install one file, I have to go back searching through a mountain of folders to find and install the next one. This process goes on and on, untill Ive finished installing the files I want. When you want to install more than just 1-2 files, it can take quite a while. It would be nice in future updates if it could be improved so that either it can install one or more files at a time, or instead of taking you back to a specific folder everytime you install something, you can alias a folder where all of your downloads are, so it doesnt take as long.

I just wanted to see what people think about the package manager, and if they put up with it or want it to be improved in some way.
If some of my post doesn't make any sense at all I am sorry, im not as good as writing stuff like this as other people are on here.

Can you not run RW in windowed mode and have that and the folder window open at the same time where the files are stored that you want to install?

What they need to do is allow you to use ctrl to highlight more than one damn pack at a time.. It is stupid beyond belief that it does not do this..

(although mine defaults to the folder last used)

Im not quite sure what you mean Geoff. I run RW in windowed mode, but its not the game that has the package manager in it?

If you are using Vista you can create a link to say your RS/RW download folders for easier access thus cutting down on the number of clicks needed to get there.

Sorry Jon. I assumed that RW worked in a similar way to RS  So the launcher takes up the whole screen?

I will stick to things I know about in the future.

I just put all my .rwp/.rpk files on my desktop save hunting for files and is quicker then just drop em in a folder after, but i agree being able to do a batch would be sooo convenient.

I had a French route with about 310 .rpk files which would have taken hours to do with the Package Manager in RW.

I therefore copied all the .rpk files into a single folder. Made a sub-folder named Assets and used 7zip to extrack all of the .rpk files into Assets

7zip did this happily and I ended up with an Assets folder with several sub-folders for the various asset providers, copied this into my RailWorks Assets folder (making sure nothing was overwritten), and it all worked fine. Took about 10 minutes to do the whole lot.

There are many complaints, I will, a later date discuss. Tho I can say, "Package manager", aint one of them. I believe in Everything has a place, and everything in its place, ( not to humans, only objects). If one makes a place (for example partition off bout 50Gig and then call this partition STORAGE), then one can have a folder known as RW. In this foloder would be sub-folders, known as Just Trains, Kuju and RSDL. Then more sub-folders ie, Diesel, passenger...et al. This way one would be in a position to simply follow the yellow folder road to successful packaging. Btw. It would be a neat idea to have a little batch file at the root folder to eliminate, all BAK and PAK files. For development A folder known as Development may be made, this may reside in the forlder RW have given you known as source. The 101 requirement for successful projects is ORGANISED filing. This IS a prerequisite. Cool!! Take care y'all... :evilbat: Alexander

So the RW package manager works in a different way to the RS one!
Another good reason why I am glad that I have decided not to update to RW.
I'm not being nasty, but I have spent nearly two years getting to grips with RS, and I now have a nice stable simulator which I very much enjoy using to my own satisafaction. I simply don't want to start again from square one with RW. I'm getting too old for steep learning curves!
regards Ted.

There arn't any really steep learning curves with RW Ted, or at least minimal. About the only thing of note is that they've repackaged the Packager & Assets Editor to be inclusive within the "Options" screen you have in RS. It is a much better way of doing things, rather than the dis-jointed way you had to under the old scheme of things.

Hi Chris

I think what Ted is saying is that it worked OK in Rail Simulator but does not seem to work OK in RW and there are a few more hoops to go through to achieve a result. The concept of a central location for starting any operation in RW is, of course, a great idea. In RS I can line up all the .rpk files on the desktop, double click on each one and they install without problem one after the other. The first installation takes a little while and then all subsequent ones are a bit faster.

I find it odd that ctrl to multi select doesnt work though.. You would think it would just be an obvious thing..

Time for everyone to send complaints in to support@railsimulator.com I'm sure this is something they can fix quickly and was just overlooked..
