the "stupid" lights are usually not supposed to light anything up!

Re: New lights ?
Have my eyes decieved me or did I dream this but was there not a scene in the Railworks trailer that showed the HST from an above view with lamp beams!

Re: New lights ?
1) I agree. This was a preblem with RailSim too, and was never addressed fully. I have to my brightness (advanced setting) at 40. Anything under 30 will leave you in the dark. This is a realism feel to the game that should, must be addressed. MSTS had it right with hi/low beams track illumination. You can't drive a train in the dark, so can we get this fixed. If I wreck my train, or pass a speed marker, because I did not see it in time, I'm gonna sue somebody.buyme wrote:Hi can any one tell me is there any addon that changes them stupied lights that come with the trains in RW they dont even light up tunnles or track at night time .

2) Another realism feel would be to get the RR Crossing bells to sound when passing them. MSTS had this effect good too. I have played most of the routes now, and I never heard RR Xing bells in or out of the cab. Can anyone suggest a way to fix this, or are we awaiting a patch to address both of these problems?
3) My final problem with realism is.... the legal use of the horn. According to the manual you should use the horn at RR Xings, tunnels, and station approachs. However, if you use it after 1800 hours, and before 0600 hours you get penalized for illegal use of horn. This should not happen, and takes away from the realism feel. When I visit a freind in upstate NY you can hear whistles blow all night long at the nearby station, and RR Xings. So why can't we do it here?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Before I purchased this game I think I saw just about every trailer/video. I can't say I saw that one. However, if you or anyone else have seen it then please place a link for it.ightenhill wrote:Have my eyes decieved me or did I dream this but was there not a scene in the Railworks trailer that showed the HST from an above view with lamp beams!

I'm a little doubtful here, because RailSim never fixed it either. Only MSTS had it right.Slammer423 wrote:hi Buyme

Re: New lights ?
To clarify, although some modern day traction tends to have brighter beams, the purpose of locomotive lights was to ensure that people could see the train, not so that the train would illuminate the track ahead (you'd need some pretty powerful floodlights to do that!). In this respect, RW is fairly accurate.

Re: New lights ?
Except in America Ash, where I guess this falls a bit flat, but yes, certainly most European trains have lighting to be seen by other drivers, rather than the driver to see where he is going.

Re: New lights ?
No disrespect intended Ashgray, but my father was an engineer for some 25 years, and although in the early years your statement was true. However, somewhere in the mid 70's with train wrecks on the rise, and cowboy engineers as my dad called them, The NTSB required Hi/Lo beams for this very reason. Some already had them, now it is a requirement. I remember (most fond memories) as a teenager on summer breaks riding with my dad on the Northeast Corridor, and at night you can see some 20yards ahead of you. With the hi beems on maybe some 30yards. Therefore this realism must be addressed. I'm not a real engineer, and this is only a game, but I'm sure most of us would like to see the rails if only just a bit to capture night time scenes, and tunnel workings.ashgray wrote:To clarify, although some modern day traction tends to have brighter beams, the purpose of locomotive lights was to ensure that people could see the train, not so that the train would illuminate the track ahead (you'd need some pretty powerful floodlights to do that!). Re: New lights ?
Ash, this may well be the case on UK prototypes, however, this is not the full story when it concerns US prototypes where headlights (and "ditch lights") are there for the benefit of the train crew and "crossing lights" (and to some extent the headlights, also) are there to warn of the train's presence.ashgray wrote:To clarify, although some modern day traction tends to have brighter beams, the purpose of locomotive lights was to ensure that people could see the train, not so that the train would illuminate the track ahead (you'd need some pretty powerful floodlights to do that!). There's a quite long but detailed article here about headlights, ditch lights, crossing lights. This page includes extracts from (and a link to) the Federal regulations governing such things.

My mistake..just watched it again and it must be my monitor calibration but at 1.00 the exhaust pumping out gives quite a similar effect when viewed from above.. perhaps this is the solution LOL

Re: New lights ?
Nice link Rik, wish I found it. Maybe the RW Devs will take note and address this proplem.Wikkus wrote:Ash, this may well be the case on UK prototypes, however, this is not the full story when it concerns US prototypes where headlights (and "ditch lights") are there for the benefit of the train crew and "crossing lights" (and to some extent the headlights, also) are there to warn of the train's presence.ashgray wrote:To clarify, although some modern day traction tends to have brighter beams, the purpose of locomotive lights was to ensure that people could see the train, not so that the train would illuminate the track ahead (you'd need some pretty powerful floodlights to do that!). Re: New lights ?
Some interesting and enlightening posts. In light of these, I guess the question of how accurate RW is in this respect is down to whether you're running an American route (where they'd need to be much brighter) or an older UK route such as Somerset & Dorset (where loco lights were certainly never intended to be more than markers).

Re: New lights ?
Hello,
Light beams did work in RS.
However, they only lit up the track and terrain so it was not ideal and more code needed to be written to light up assets too. There was also a visual bug that created ordering problems on assets with transparency so the code was commented out.
We also want more control over strength/distance etc for the beams, otherwise it would just look a little daft.
There were also many other cool features that were worked on too.
One of the ones that I liked was the cloud shadow/sunlight effect that was displayed on the terrain and then further extended to show up on assets. It really did bring the landscape to life, it has a performance hit and it was based on DX10 tech but there are many features like this that did not make the final cut that I hope we can bring to the platform to help make the RWs experience more enjoyable for all.
regards
Derek
