For the members who dont like STEAM

Post by dipper6 »

yes, I was one member who didn't want steam for reasons posted many times, I had ordered RW DVD
and then cancelled it.
However, I read all the posts and advice in this forum and gradually realised that Steam might not be so bad after all.

So I re-ordered RW DVD and I'm now glad I did so.
The only details you give Steam is a username, password and email address, just as you do in every website
when you buy software and activate it.
Then you go through the process of downloading it, letting it do the updates and thats it.
From then on youcan go offline and stay offline just as long as you want to, for ever if you wish.
Me, I go online once a week just to check for updates.
BTW, I made 2 blunders and had to re-install RW twice more, not a problem, did not have to enter the activation number.

There is nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.

Also, everytime you switch on your computer info is automatically sent to MicroSoft.

Hi Dipper

Just one last comment on the subject before I retreat back to the RS forum.

The objection to Steam us very simple. Steam has complete control over the program whether you are online or not. If for some reason, whether it be sooner or later, RS.com can no longer support the program amd Steam also decide that they can no longer support the program, I see a real possibility that the program could suddenly stop working never to work again without some legal or illegal hack.

I am NOT going to spend hundreds of hours creating content for a program that could stop working like this and deny me access to my work on a whim. I can continue with RS indefinitely without any worry so that is what I am going to do.

If RS.com could come up with a cast iron guarantee that the program will always work, a Steam free version or a developer version that does not require Steam then I will be happy to go with RailWorks but that is it.

If everybody were to worry about the what if's and maybe's then nobody would do anything! I think certain people are cutting their noses off to spite their faces imo? You will just have to miss out on the superb stuff that is coming onto railworks since Rs isn't supported you will be left out an fall further behind. And i have seen ancient games like tachyon the fringe on steam so perhaps that would encourage the doubters? I have just downloaded a wonderful Danish route and it is amazing :o but only for RW's

Geoff,

Yes, and if MicroSoft were to go bust you will have no OS when it needs activting,
that also applies to lots of websites that use activation, and some only allow 1 activation.

Also, dont forget, every time you switch on, or restart, your PC, information is automatically sent to Microsoft.
That doesn't happen with Steam.

Really? Tell me more. I'd defy it to send the information every time I switch on as often I don't go on line before I shut down.

Hello Everyone
I may be one of the usual suspects but I'm with Geoff(Acorncomputer) on this one.
Yes we could be potentially falling behind because we refuse to purchase RW.
Yes I agree I have seen some fresh eye candy to woo people over.
However given the speed at which RS was dropped like a hot potato I am reluctant to change to RW
I will continue with RS and make do with that for now at least.
Kind regards Stephen

When you switch on and Windows has loaded in, just observe the activity on your modem, that is, if its external, then of course ther is the network icon in the sys. tray on the taskbar, its easily seen working.

Ian, you'll enjoy it. Opening up the new package is great, the new-ness smell, the wonderful manuals, the cool box. The eco-disc is terrible and as for Steam, I was left stranded for a few hours because I couldn't connect to the servers. I have Rail Works and I'm enjoying it, but I agree with the folks here who are holding out, I still think Steam sucks and hate that I'm forced to use it to play Rail Works. And like the folks above again, I too wonder what will happen if RSDL go down? MSTS 1 still works to this day. If RSDL go down and Steam no longer support Rail Works, how will we install it???

If RSDL "go down", it won't affect you as you'll already have it installed (and hopefully backed up).

Also, the curious notion that your system somehow sends information to Microsoft every time you boot up is sheer nonsense. Modems flash whatever operating system you use. To be honest, this sort of wild speculation isn't helpful.

What about in the future? I've had MSTS 1 on and off my PC loads of times. If Steam stops supporting Rail Works, how do I install it?
