Perhaps we need another thread, or subsidiary within this one, which short routes would you like to see.

Definition of "short" being 30 miles or less, they don't need to be a branchline but could be a section of main line between two logical locations (i.e. not "pointless routes from nowhere to nowhere" as some of the MSTS crowd were heard to describe them). That might give some readers of the thread the inspiration to start building, rather than being daunted by the usual Euston to Glasgow, Paddington to Penzance type suggestions.

Some shorter routes I would like to see are:
Bletchley to Bedford
Haltwhistle to Alston
NYMR (I think someone may be doing this already)
Blackpool Tramway
Maybe Bournemouth to Weymouth/Weymouth Quay. Slightly longer at 35 miles but pre-singling and electrification a good blend of scenery, infrastructure and operation.

I think as you suggested Vern, Fort William to Mallaig would be a good starter, not too long, could be extended, lots of varied scenery, and the route would be suitable for modern or steam enthusiasts, could run any type of train (usual or specials).

Great Idea. Might start thinking about it.

I second that!

Stunning route that would suit all tastes. Heck of an artistic challenge for creating the scenery though! The IOW track texture would be nice to use on this route.

I've got that one covered:

As a bit of a cheek, is there any chance of you releasing that MSTS water tank from you Weymouth route seperately in Railworks? It would prove idea for my Kemble Station. :)

Incidentally, excellent lookin route, both versions.

It's not my model I'm afraid - I think it came from this site so try the original author.

Edinburgh Waverly to Glasgow Queen street, as I use it nearly every week. That with the rest of the central belt would keep me happy :-)

Yes, but it is being released for MSTS next week from Making Tracks, I'm really looking forward to it.

I would like to see the Bath Templecombe route extended from Templecombe to Highbridge Burnham and Bridgwater North.Bridgwater being my home town.

The Cathcart circle in Glasgow or perhaps the Ayrshire line.

Thanks,

Here's a couple of @30 mile suggestions for all you SR chaps and chappeses out there...

Woking to Basingstoke (similar to what I did for BA).
Redhill to Brighton - I figure this avoids the complexity of building the London area.
Southampton to Portsmouth - nice winding line along the Solent estuary. Last time I travelled across there it was still diesel and worked by either Thumpers or Cromptons and Mark Ones.
Brighton to Eastbourne and or Seaford (eh, Jason!!).
Hastings to Ashford.
Basingstoke to Salisbury - a bit further than 30 miles but more thrashy.

Of course for most of the above we would need some SR stock - electric wise a CIG, VEP or EPB and diesel - maybe a Class 205 Thumper. I guess the 158 could be used between Soton and Pompey though.

One advantage of the Southern (for some!) is that things are more compact and passenger orientated, not so much in the way of sprawling freight yards or terminals to build.

Less than 30 miles of mainline, but it's probably considered "nowhere to nowhere" since it goes in a circle;
