On the subject of the gamepad idea:

I would consider myself 'old school' when it comes to driving trains in Railworks. I don't use the 'HUD' as destroys the experience for me (also as it detracts from the superb cab modelling done by some developers). I like to have the controls right at my fingertips, so I am going to look favorably at the use of a gamepad (so long as you can set it up/program it the way you want).

The right analogue stick could be used to move your viewpoint around the train/cab and the left could replicate the combined throttle/brake handle on modern units. The D-pad could be used to select the gear or used alternatively as a reverser. The start button would serve ideally as a pause button and the back/select button would be great as a quick shortcut to your drivers task list. The shoulder buttons would be best served as a way to cycle through the views avaliable to the player.

...well thats the way I would want things anyway :D

I have been driving with my Xbox 360 controller via Xpadder for months now. I use it a lot for old games that do not have gamepad support. :D

Are we all starting to sound a bit self centred though? The reason why this would never affect UKTS is because RailWorks users are only a fraction of the users on this website, do we forget the massive MSTS and Trainz usergroups? Only to mention a few though, there are also many other minor groups and the BVE groups also, Railworks is still one of the newest kids on the block and this site has been around far longer than it has, so if this entire community collapses (touch wood :D ) there would be an effect, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Where do I get the free beer from our Australian friend ?

OK - I realise he was having a sense of humour moment. Free beer is always welcome.

Anybody who wants to come and do a research trip for building the route through the Adelaide Hills can send me a PM. If you're English I'll even get a couple out of the fridge before you come so they aren't too cold :D

I had a PS1 and PS2 consoles little while back and those gave me very sore thumbs and aching... no doubt due to over use of watching Lara Crofts botty on the screen.... Anyways, do these ones nowadays have softer controls?

the XBOX pad is vastly superior to the PS pads. it's a fantastic design.

Thats good. I know these things would develop. But I confess i am not one for consoles. The old PS controllers the buttons were quite hard to press.

On afterthought the move towards joypad controllers is probably beneficial for many but I think it will always remain controversial because it's a deliberate move away from traditional "simming" and a step into the "other" world of mass-gaming! Simmers often like to differentiate themselves from casual gamers. In fact the word "simulation" implies that it is not a game but an recreation of the real thing down to minute levels.
Hardcore simmers are quite proud of the fact they need a keyboard or specialist device to fly or drive because it implies a large degree of complexity which is what it's all about and makes Joe Simmer a happy boy! Conversely, the implication of using a joypad to drive/fly implies a very dumbed down experience where only limited functions are needed and a small number of buttons ; usually move, aim, shoot etc! Naturally this makes Joe Simmer shudder involuntarily and makes his fore-simmers turn in their graves!

Using a PC USB Human Interface Device to interact with a piece of software is not a new technology. 6 years later and this is what RSC get excited about? There is still no hope.

Re the joypad. So long as its a choice being offered then I dont see a problem at all.

Personally I'll be sticking to a combination of keyboard and mouse control and if that option were to be teken away then I'd be a little miffed, to say the least.

As for the new routemap displays, which appear to be tied into the joypad, I dont think there's any substitute for route knowledge!
