That sounds like you are trying to form points using two different track types. Points should use the same type of track for each divergence and the different track type should begin (if desired) beyond the frogs. The "Blend" tool can then be used to create a more subtle transition.
What I try to do is end the siding track just before the main line junction, then use the main line texture to actually make the point - but often the siding texture leaks ...

I've so far had no luck with the blend tool.. no matter what the circumstance :(

Not sure what "no luck" means in terms of what you are trying to do but this might help. For the blend tool to work the two tracks you are blending together must use the same geometry. If they are not 100% identical a blend gives very strange results.
