New PC Specs check

Post by rhysicus1989 »

Hey guys, I have drawn up a list of parts for my new Rig. A Friend of mine has been helping me choose parts, but I was hoping it would be possible for some other people to look through these specs and check that they are all compatible with each other. My friend has told me they are, but I am hoping for some more confirmation before I commit to buying and building :P This rig will mainly be for Railworks but I am planning on running games like Battlefield 3, COD MW3 etc on it.

Wish I had your budget.....

Whilst all those components will complement each other nicely in theory, the socket 2011 platform/Ivy Bridge is still very much un-proven, so the only way to find out is to test it.

Certainly a bit OTT for Railworks in its present form, can't comment on the other games.

Well in our house (probably in the houses of many who frequent these boards) that would keep the family going in essentials for quite some time - as it is, I hide the odd bit of DLC then wait in trembling anticipation for the credit card bill to come in - can't hide it indefinitely though from the one with the purse strings :)

That case is WAYYYYYY too expensive for what it is.

May I recommend the HAF X
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-H ... 315&sr=1-1

EDIT: Also I would recommend ebuyer for building a pc, alot cheaper than Amazon.

Thats an awesome set up!

Dont worry it absolutely trash COD and BF3, infact RW3 is far more demanding then both of them.

So yes, it should keep you current for the next few months at least :D

Case is very over priced. Go for the HAF X that Secludedsfx suggest. For the price of the Cosmos you could get a Silverstone TJ07 (Fantastic case)

Ram i would suggest the Corsair Vengeance 16GB
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/16gb-%28 ... -z68-and-p

Im using the 8GB kit and is fantastic memory.

Other suggestions for the graphics cards though would be the HD7850/HD7870 or the HD7950/HD7970 Series as they are all slighlty lower priced and all similar in performance figures as well

http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-har ... 19/972/971
Those cards all in Range order (7850 at top 7970 at bottom)

The gear you selected would play BF3 perfectly fine, May i ask about the other games you would play? As for COD it is still using the COD4 graphics engine and most things can run that perfectly fine.

Also i would love that budget as well for a new system :P

Rising Storm -Name is in the credits :D - To Do scenario, where you go along at 50mph in a Pendo? Who would play it?
Anyone want to help in Play Testing future Rising Storm/ Ro2 Maps? If so please PM me.

Aye, Well I do have a large budget for this, I have around £600 of my own money saved so far, hopefully, as long as I pass my ship driving exam on Thursday, I will get a £500 bonus from my company, and I have around £2000 inheritance money from my late grandmother, so money isn't a problem :P, I always knew a rig like this would be very expensive and I'm more than willing to spend the money.

My biggest concern is buying components and them not being compatible with each other. So its good to see that the general consensus so far is positive about this rig.

I will look into the other suggestions people have made, In particular using Ebuyer rather than Amazon, I am planning to shop around. At present I have chosen the links on Amazon just to show the product itself, so I will be shopping round for each item before I buy.

The other games I'm thinking of is games such as Skyrim, Flight simulator X, Wings of Prey, farming simulator, Railworks, all of the call of dutys, GTA 4, and GTA 5 when it comes out, Ship simulator extremes, in fact as many simulator type games as possible really :P

GTA 4 is an incredibly demanding game and not a great port, but is so much fun though, FSX X depends on settings but needs a lot of ram and mighty Graphics card. Skyrim though will run on most things, Ran fine for me maxed out with the high texture mod Bethesda released for it.

All the parts are fully compatiable with each other though. I do suggest Scan a lot though as a great company, so is Ebuyer. myself have never purchased computer parts from Amazon.

Lovely stuff mate, Thanks for confirming :), If Im honest Im no expert so Im worried about jumping into the deep end and drowning in this stuff! lol!

I know that the motherboard will hold DDR3 Ram, which I have on the list. and I know that the DVD Rewriter and Hard drive i already have are SATA, and need the SATA cable for it, and is the motherboard and processor compatable because they both have the 2011 socket?

I will shop around on Ebuyer and that scan a lot, see what they have to offer :), many thanks for your help :)

Any other games/simulators you could recommend?

As far as i can tell they are. But rather have someone who is intrested in the Intel side of things to confirm that though.

Skyrim already on the list is a must have so is Fallout New Vegas. Other games i suggest is LA Noire (Just completed and is fantastic), Future release being Bioshock Infinte (or what ever the new one is called), IL2 1946 is still a massivly played game online and does support Win 7, Not sure about Cliffs of Dover though as i don't own it yet.

Can most likely think of others though, and i will update when i do.

Trust me it is incredible. Ive had it since it came out, some 3 years ago.

Its regularly updated, extra aircraft are released as DLC (but whats nice is even if you don't buy them they are available as AI) and it is by far the most realistic simulation of flight seen on a PC. Thats feedback from real life pilots.

Forget IL2 and Cliffs of Dover, this is where its at.

The base game is now free to play, if you like it, just add more aircraft. It has a full dynamic campaign that allows you to fight the entire war from any side, command a squadron - you name it. You can fly the fighters, two seaters, and multi engine bombers, and also man the guns.

Further it is very well optimised so a modest rig will run it well.

Oh and then there is multiplayer....

Anyone merely interested in simming should get it. Its breathtaking

Head over to the ROF forums tell em J2-Squid sent ya! :D

Your existing cables will work, you only need a SATA 3 cable for a SATA 3 device.
and is the motherboard and processor compatable because they both have the 2011 socket?
Yes, and no.... a Socket 2011 CPU will physically fit in a Socket 2011 motherboard, but check that the CPU is actually supported in the motherboards BIOS.

I'd suggest you track down some comparative reviews of the Ivy Bridge CPUs, when they become available--I suspect that just like Sandy Bridge the 'best bang per buck' CPU will be one of the i5 models, probably the i5-3570K.
Extra cores and hyper-threading are cool, but only if the applications you run can take advantage of them, so checking how the games you play are reported to run on Sandy Bridge i7's and i5's will give a good indication of how Ivy Bridge will perform. Expect a 10% increase (on paper and in benchmarking) in power in an Ivy Bridge CPU compared to its Sandy Bridge counterpart, but in 'real world' circumstances I'd expect any increase to be less than half that.
Ivy Bridge isn't a new range as such, just an older range after a fortnight at the gym and a course of steroids---leaner (22 as opposed to 32 Nm fabrication) and just that wee bit faster and stronger. You'll see it described as "evolutionary rather than revolutionary"

I would entirely recommend ArmA 2 (and 3 when it comes out later this year) if you're into military simulators.
If you do get it make sure to join a clan and get ready for an awesome experience :D
