I think the point of those headlights is to make the train more visible, rather than to illuminate the view ahead.
10m would only be enough to give the driver a clear view of an obstruction he was about to crash into. No train travelling at speed could stop in such a short distance.

I don't think that they would be totally useless, I remember going on a 122 a couple of months back at night and the headlamps illuminated maybe 10m in front on the train, so the headlamps on these units would probably do something similar

A BR Blue all-over one is also one that wouldn't go amiss. I think the preserved VEP (Gordon Pettit) has slightly different front end paintwork to the original BR Blue livery (yes, livery pedantry again ). I'm not sure if this variation was seen in the days of BR Blue or not, but it would still be useful for those who want at least the preserved VEP in game

On topic - Not too sure if the shade of blue used on the retro re-paint on 3417 is the same as originally carried by 7717, Yellow warning panel on the original version was on the gangway door only and didn't cover the jumper recesses as on 3417.

I suppose if it was high pitched on a 442 (I've only ever heard one going past at speed or at Brighton station) then i geuss it was mainly the compressor equipment that was salvaged. As it has the trademark compressor sound.

Incidently i've just noticed that 4 REP's we're originally classified 441, didn't know that before

They could do a 4REP/4TC pack, that would even out the traction motor costs
